We're off to Anglesey for the weekend later, and I'm taking the road bike. I've put this route together for a little tour of the island, any locals care to comment?

Also, ideas for second-half cafe stops gratefully accepted.

Erm you've loaded the 2nd half with all of the hills. It's far hillier than most people think.

From Malltraeth the quiet road up to Bodorgan then Aberfraw is nice. Avoiding Rhosneigr is a good call as the tourists drive like morons there

The cafe in Church Bay is good but can get very busy. Ditto the cafe at the working windmill (Melin Llynon) near Llanddeusant

If you want a proper meal for lunch then Llastra farm is really good (just south of Amlwch)

I wouldn't bother going into Llanerchymedd - there's really nowt there worth seeing other than a crap pub, a worst shop and drivers that ignore the mini roundabout. It's a tiny little place and the road to Rhosybol isn't at all nice for riding on.   You could go from Parc to Llanfihangel direct

If you get tired near Llangefni you can cut straight back across to Newborough on the cycle path that goes along the River Cefni (good bike friendly cafe at Malltraeth village). If you're lucky the ospreys will be back this year

Ta.

Better the other way round then maybe?

My preference is harder start and easier finish. You might be different but the island is far hillier than most people think 'cos it seems flat in a car

If you Google Tour du Môn Sportive that'll give you some ideas for various length 1 day routes

Love these threads as I find out about new cafes and stop-offs on my Anglesey doorstep! There's a good cafe and big cake at the Oriel gallery just outside of Llangefni, on the 2nd half of your route. https://www.orielmon.org/en-gb/whats-on

I have a route plotted to follow the roads round the coast and circumnavigate the island.
Just trying to pluck up courage and get a good weather window.
Have fun with your route. 🙂

Anglesey is hillier than people think and it's the only place I know where you can do a full circle and have a headwind all the way round!

If I was you I would do the Tour de Mon route, it takes in the best places and avoids the busier roads:

I was going to mention headwinds.

I would include Mynydd Bodafon just South of Brynrefail. Oh and I now find myself drawn to Llastra Farm. Maybe even an overnighter.

The food at Llastra Farm is excellent.

Sooo, I did this yesterday

https://ridewithgps.com/trips/118038164

Last 30km were a bit of a struggle, as I found the headwind and it was getting cold.

And surprisingly hilly in a no particularly big hills kind of way, just pretty constantly uppy-downy.

As for cafés, unfortunately there were none as I was late starting. I did have a quick brew from the kiosk at Port Amlwch, and their bacon/sausage butties looked excellent.

Good effort. That's a big day out

The roads in the NW around Llanfairyhonwy are lovely. Very quiet, proper grass up the middle lost lanes riding

Absolutely, that was the highlight of the day, and the weather was perfect. Took MrsIHN back there in the van today to show her the views, the fog had other ideas...

Did go to the café in Church Bay though, nice little place.

You betcha, eh, eh, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

Or more accurately, cos we're at that age and stage in our relationship where we go for a drive on Sunday afternoon, and if we feeling particularly racey we'll stop for some tea and cake 🙂
