You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi all
Yeah, I know, its road, so not really STW material, but I am in the process of getting a custom frame built, the problem is that 953 (my first choice) is in incredibly high demand and incredible short supply. So I am being manouvered (in a very polite way) to 853 Proteam tubing.
My question is this, how much of a difference will there be between 853PT and 953 other than the anti-rust properties, everyone I know who has ridden 953 likens it to "better even than Ti" and swears they'll never ride anything else again....yeah, whatever ! You seem to be looking at 0.5lb difference in frame weight, I can just leave an allen key out of my tube box and save that !
I love the idea of stainless steel, but not sure if its really worth the (very uncertain) length of wait for it.
Whats the view of anyone who has had both ?
Thanks guys
Sean
maybe look at some of the Columbus XCR 953alike stuff?

I think you'd be waiting a long time for that person to reply even on a roadie forum.
Don't worry though, on STW there's no requirement to know anything about a subject to make a judgement on it!
Me, if it was my dream project I'd wait for the 953.
I waited 9 months for my first Pegoretti (Columbus Spirit), and after 12 months have just been told that my second will be here in 4 weeks (XCR). All I can say is that both have been worth every minute of the wait. Go for the 953 and sit it out. It will be worth it in the end. Much nicer ride, lighter and longer lasting.
it's more about O/D tube size and how it affects the ride,is there much difference between the 2? personally i would wait for the 953 even if they will ride similar due to similar dimensions.
(i would choose oversize spirit or shaped deda eom-16.5 over normal sized 853)
talk to your builder, he should be able to advise unless it's a startup with the welding knowledge but little racing experience or years of feedback from riders.
What is the availibility on 931 these days?
Yep I would hold out for 953 if I was paying top dollar.
Thanks guys, basically, exactly as I was thinking !!! Its just always nice to have your hunches confirmed !
Solarider, might just drop you a line, cos you are in my line of thinking there.
