Hello.

When it comes to MTB stuff I'm reasonably clued up but I have literally no idea about road gear.

I have a hybrid commuter thing with an anonymous chain set with the only words being " prowheel forged Gloria" stamped on the back of the crank arms.

I need two new chainrings for it but I suspect they'll be more than a new chain set!

So, what can I fit? It appears to be 110 BCD with 36/50t rings.

Many thanks

Oh and it's an 8 speed setup with a square taper BB if that makes any odds in terms of replacement ..

this is a deal..

go with one of these

http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b0s109p45 - lots of choice of arm length and rings

of the newer design for a pound more

Thanks, that looks the sort of thing.

Excuse my ignorance but as my BB shell is 68mm but the BB spans 72mm as it sticks out a bit, is the above still suitable size wise?

I had hoped I could find some cheapo chainrings as the bike is distinctly economy in stature!

If you just want chainrings then maybe these

Inner

outer

If you're looking for a complete replacement then in theory you might need to change your bottom bracket as different cranks theoretically need different widths.

This would be the axle length (around 110mm ish) rather than the shell width - sounds like you should have a 68mm shell bb in your bike but someone has put a 73mm width shell version in instead. If you haven't died in a ball of flames yet then I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Anything cheaper than £24 for inner and outer and I'd be guessing you're either looking at picking up a sale item off CRC or something on eBay.

Aha, those rings look like a bargain. I think I'll order those. I can't say I've noticed a problem with the BB but the bike is a halfords special so it's no great surprise!

As I've signed up for a charity Coast to Coast ride in September I am sorely tempted by this instead of fixing up my hybrid, seems a bit of a bargain:

. The bcd is "old " MTB. Got an old Biopace c/c anywhere? That will be 110 just nice that wonderful new compact stuff.
