Mate in work has a roadbike he uses for moderate rides around Cardiff area. Currently set up as 10 speed, 38T with 11-26 cassette as far as I can tell. He wants to get a better range of gears and I havent got a clue when it comes to road cycling what works well. Doesnt want to add a front mech at the moment. Any suggestions please?
He can't do much without a front mech.He could fit a cassette up to 34 with a long cage rear mech and would probably need a longer chain.
Another chain ring is the best option with then get a good lower gear plus something a bit higher, compact 50-34. Might be quite expensive.
If it's only for moderate use does he need the really big gears? My roadie is 52:18 and I don't want to go bigger than that except on big descents. If he changed to a 33T front ring and kept the 11-26 he'd have quite a few more usable low ratios. But that would need an MTB chainset...
