I want a windproof for road riding, but not super-thin stick in a back pocket type - just light weight. Really thin softshell or thicker pertex type stuff. A bit of stretch would be nice. Needs back pockets. Also needs to be available in red.

Who said Perfetto / Gabba? Own up.

Alternatively Stolen Goat do a gilet in the Orkan range - colour might be an issue.

I have an Endura one that I think has plastic printed on the front and arms, was £70 a few years ago, works well.

Endura wind-chill.

It's soft shell, shower proof and toasty warm. Available in red. Gloves are good too. And I feel the cold normally!

Had 2 Endura Windchills in 10 years. Apart from weather where you'd need a full on waterproof shell they are the perfect cold weather jacket

Endura windchill, in sale in small and med at CRC.
At -5 degrees to about +3 I wear a breathable vest thing and long sleeve thin top under it.
At 3 to 8 just a breathable T.
Over 8 degrees, it’s too hot.
Keep the pit zips open all the time.
It’s ace.

Possibly the Jetstream, it's bloody brilliant and the perfect dry-ish weather road top for me.

Is it a jersey or a jacket? A bit of both probably, but you can put a baselayer under it and it does the same job as a jacket.

It doesn't meet any of your requirements but I have a rapha Classic Windjacket which works very well. I've had it about 8 or 9 years ago so it may have changed now but I've worn it quite a lot and it's never let me down.

I've got a castelli perfecto ros.

Windproof
Thin
Softshell material
Pockets on back.
Mine is orange.

It's Been good down to freezing with a couple
Of base layers and a gilet.

Not cheap, lots of people seem to be wearing them on the road round here.

I'm never wearing it on the MTB! The fabric looks like it would rip on tiny thorn and get stained by mud.

Road bike only and only in the dry or with mudguards 😊

+1 for the Rapha Classic Windjacket - fantastic bit of kit - windproof, light, showerproof and breathable

I have the classic 2 and it has a bit of stretch in it. There are reflective strips and they give it the stretch, the cut works really well

Thinner than a softshell style top but very versatile, no rear pockets though

Castelli Perfetto- superb jacket.

I have two - one for road and one for mtb.

Best bit of kit I own.

Light weight, comfortable, good fit, well made, breaths well, rain resistant, wind proof, bloody brilliant.

Perfetto looks alright but £180. Gabba I think is a bit heavier weight than I was thinking. I'd love one but right now I might want something lighter. I have a Garneau jacket which is a traditional heavy ish softshell but it's too warm when it's medium weather. But a thinner one could be just as warm with something underneath it. I had a really nice non-cycling North Face Apex top which was still stretchy and soft but was really thin, but I lost it.

The Endura FS2600 looks similar, I might try that.

The reason it has to be red btw is that I was given a pair of Assos tights which are just brilliant, but they have this stupid red stripe on the front so they cannot be worn with anything that's not red or black/red. I still look stupid when wearing red on top but it's just about tolerable.

I don't own one but I saw this recently and I think it meets your requirements. Shame they don't have much stock left.

Really? Did I get a bad one then? The windproof material feels like old school vinyl tablecloth and has zero breathability, I'd swear I get sweatier in my Jetstream than I do in any waterproof. I only use mine now for muddy winter CX outings where I'm wearing so many baselayers it doesn't really matter and I don't care if it gets ripped or muddy... This and my condom-thin packable windproof that STILL conspires to get really sweaty inside has just put me off Endura windproof offerings in general.

Am liking Orkaan stuff so far, better yet buy the short sleeve top and the arm warmers, more versatility.

Is yours like a Roubaix Jersey with the vinyl bits on the chest and front of arms?

It's my go to winter road top and I tend to run hot, but have never felt it lacked breathability.

I wear it on its own in spring or autumn and with a baselayer in winter and I do put in some effort on my road bike.

I ordered a Endura FS260 Pro Jetstream for £90, a Castelli Mortirolo VI for £108 and a Castelli Transition 2 for £105, all size large.

The FS260 is a thin, soft and very stretchy fabric. More insulating than basic pertex, but still pretty light. It's very comfortable indeed because it's really very stretchy so it stays snug without being restrictive. Over a LS base layer it's like wearing nothing; I can fit a generic fleece under it and it's a little bulky around my big gunz biceps (cough) but manageable, and still very mobile. Arms are very long indeed, but the body is of decent length which means it doesn't ride up my fat belly.

The Transition 2 is a lot more substantial, smaller but probably better cut, but a lot less stretchy. It's clearly a lot warmer, but conversely I couldn't get anything on underneath it except maybe another cycling jersey or SS base layer. Nice jacket, but less versatile for me, only usable in cold weather. Comparable in usage to my Garneau jacket but nicer and better cut than that. Also smaller cut - it went over my belly snugly but usable.

The Mortirolo is basically windproof fleece weight. For me that would clearly put it in the winter only category as I run hot. However, I couldn't even get my arm in the sleeve, so that's out from the start. I never considered my arms to be that bulky but hey ho.

So the Endura wins hands down for my original brief. I'm a bit wary of how it'll be in cold weather, although because it's comfortable with a fleece on underneath it offers more insulation than any of the options really. And the main thing is that I'll probably use it most of the year with a base layer under it - spring, summer, and much of the winter down here in South Wales. And it's by far the most comfortable due to the stretch. It's not windproof at all on the back though, so hopefully that's not an issue since I rarely ride on windy days and if I do I'm MTBing and I have a load more options for that.

since I rarely ride on windy days

Starting to sound like a fair weather cyclist!

As Mathew said to John, there is no life form on earth less deserving of God's love than a fair weather cyclist.

Not exactly. I ride in all weathers *except* wind. And then I go MTBing in the woods. The only time the weather puts me off is when it's both windy and extremely muddy.

I find Jetstream is good in low single-digit temperatures with a merino baselayer, or in a bit higher temps with a synthetic base or worn as a single layer.

Wind's not been a problem for me, though I don't do road biking when it's really blowy.

Not terribly helpful as I don't think either can be bought new these days, but I have a red Altura Peloton Transformer and a red PX365 Magma, both great for cooler windy days with the Magma being a bit more breathable and so better for warmer temps and/or rides with intervals.

Long time since Sunday school, but I'm sure there was something in Corinthians about riding in the wind and inheriting the earth. Paul was a big fan IIRC...
