My new road wheels will be tubeless compatible so this is an opportunity to upgrade tyres too.

Seems tubeless is less popular on the road, is it worth paying a little more for tubeless tyres vs Conti 4000’s and going tubeless?

Also I’m in 25s at the moment, I find the ride ok, but I see 28 is also getting more common. Head says stick with 25s but am I missing a trick here? Frame will take up to 28.

I'd go 28mm and conti gp5000tl. In fact I did and gives a lovely ride at 75psi. Lots of grip and pretty speedy.

28mm is the narrowest I go these days. I can remember when 25mm were wide and used to ride 23mm a lot.

I've got a Hutcinson fusion on the rear of my commuter, 28mm, it's fast, and survived (with the help of a little air) a complete idiot landing on a huge square hole in the road which would have killed any tube.

Never going back to tubes.

There are some nice 28 Schwalbe Pro Ones in the classifieds, I've been using them for a while and love 'em. In fact I considered getting these as spares (for the spares I already have)

In fact I did and gives a lovely ride at 75psi.

I'm about 47-50 front, 52-55 rear. All ghetto tubeless with Durano Plus 28c tyres.

Love it.

Another vote for 28mm GP5000TL at 70ish psi. Grippy as a grippy thing and very comfy.

Pro ones seem to come up big for me, have a set of 25s and they look like comfy 28s. In fact had to replace the front with something smaller as clearance was iffy in the fork.

Schwalbe 25 come up around 28mm on a wide rim, I had them on on 20mm internal width. Very comfortable but wear quickly and not great in the wet.

Haven't tried the Conti's

Excellent. So at 100kg I’ll get by at 80-85 psi I guess.

still undecided on road tubeless quite happy with on MTB and at 38mm wide on gravel bike but was running some 30mm (Mavic Yksion) and 1st time out got a glass cut running around 80psi and got coated in slime - had to scrape glasses clean at the cafe and think the front fork still is coated - anyway eventually sealed and I pumped back up to pressure to only open up next curb I dropped off and same again next trip out - so taken off (more slime) and awaiting an internal patch - the higher pressure is a problem in my opinion

Def go for 28s and if you can stretch to the GP5000. Meant to be brilliant in rolling tests and wear well. Just choose your tubeless sealant well. I was using oko magic milk, and pissed out a puncture at 70 psi and didn't seal well.

Thanks for all the replies. Just looked at the GP5000, somewhat over budget sadly in tubeless flavour. Interested in the Schwalbes but a little concerned if they come up big, my frame is rated up to 28 so this could cut it fine. Also a bit worried about tales of longevity on the Pro Ones.

Was planning on using Stans sealant as I have a big bottle, I assume that will be fine? Plus using a track pump, is road any harder than mtb to do?

I'm pleased with my hutchinson fusions in 25mm. They are visually noticeably smaller than 25mm schwalbe Pro ones, so might assume the 28mm wouldn't be too big. You want the new 11 storm compound in a choice of 3 differing versions depending on use, I have the middle ground performance. They can be had quite a bit cheaper than Contis too.

I recently got some new wheels and pondered going tubeless too, but given they're selling off Conti GP4000's at half price at the moment I just couldn't justify spending so much on new tyres so just got a pair of cheap 4000's and running with tubes. Not convinced of the benefits of tubeless really. Apart from the fact that it is very hard to get the tyres on the rim so WHEN (not if) you do get a puncture that doesn't seal it'll take you a good hour of grunting and heaving in the rain and dark (because sods law dictates that will when you puncture) with much broken thumbs and snapped tyre leavers on the road side to get a tube in there.

I'm running 28mm at 90psi and am 90kg. I know I could go lower, but rides fine at that pressure, loads of grip and nice low rolling resistance. If I was doing more gravel/unsealed surface riding I'd probably lean more towards tubeless and lower pressures, but for pure road riding its fine.

I'm using Pro One 28mm in a Specialized Tarmac frame (so racing clearance) and while it's tight, it works fine.
Longevity - these tyres went on in August 2018 just before I did LEJOG (so there's 1000 miles straight away). They're still on there now - zero punctures, little sign of wear. That includes 2 weeks in Gran Canaria where the roads vary between very good indeed and "basically gravel" and I've done plenty of riding in the UK on them too.

Went for the Hutchinson Fusion Performance in 28 format, seemed to be the best balance of cost / good reviews (Conti 5000s would have been another £40 on top and the Fusions seem to be very well regarded). Went up a dream with a track pump and don't look too big. First couple of rides at 90pse rear and 85psi front, I may drop these 5 psi or so and see how I get on. First impressions are very positive, grip seems better, comfort seems good and speed is definitely no worse judging by Strava.

My Pro Ones squared off quickly, were prone to cuts and had poor wet grip. I binned them after the rear developed a bulge. They ride nicely but aren't up to year round conditions imo.
I switched to Hutchinson Sector 28s which are proving to be much more durable

25mm hutchinson sector storms on the winter bike - tubeless. Can't fit 28mm with the mudguards. They've been faultless throughout the last winter.

28mm conti 5000s on the other bike - also tubeless. Possibly the best tyres I've used.

Just read this post from me, bought a used bike a few days ago thats fitted with 23mm tyres, it looks positively terrifying!! I used to ride 23's years ago so tempted to give them a go and see what happens. Dont like binning things that can be used.
