Help! I'm lost in a world of unfamiliar rubber,
I want some new road tyres for my 'dale CX bike. I fancy something about 30mm wide.
What shall I spend my £30 planet x voucher on, they have SO many tyres...happy to supplement the £30 with about £20 max.
I need 2 tyres!
Cheers
I have to be honest, there aren't many tyre models that PX stock that I've tried or would want to try.
Presuming you want them to use now in winter and you had to usee your £30 on tyres, I'd probably choose https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/TYCLSTLGGFT/clement-strada-lgg--folding-tyre-700c (2 for £30) or https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/TYPARADEVO3/panaracer-race-d-evo-3-tyre (2 for ~£50).
Personally, I would buy clothing or components with the voucher and get a pair of Conti 4 Seasons, GP4000S IIs or GP5000s elsewhere. This last week I've had one of my 28mm https://www.merlincycles.com/vittoria-rubino-pro-g-isotech-folding-road-tyre-700c-87381.html up front and 28mm GP4000S II on the rear.
Assuming you're not bothered about tubeless? If so, I can't fault the Continental Sport Contact II tyres that they're selling for £6.99 a pop. 37mm or 42mm, they roll well, are grippy and handle the rough stuff surprisingly well too. No punctures. I think they're a steal.
Sport contacts +1 in a recomend what you have sort of way. They're good value, not cheap. 37mm should fit on the dale with guards, i can get a 40 mud tyre with useable clerance (unless its muddy) do a 42 might be close but fine in the dry.
Anything from Clement or Vittoria will probably be equally good.
Tbh with their current tyre sale just about anything appears to be ludicrous value for money if your happy to ride a tyre thats 95% as good as a £40 tyre, but only costs £7.50.
If I wasn't trying to have a clear out and already stocked up with slick/inter/wet MTB and CX options I'd be ordering a lot!
I too wouldn’t buy any of them. If pushed I I’d buy a pair of the older Vitoria Corsa paves. Lovely tyres that roll beautifully. Add two latex tubes for the nicest ride. I raced them through one winter. They wear fast on the rear so you really need three. I’ve not tested the replacement Corsa controls.
