Ok people need some more advice I've been doing alot more road riding now and can't currently afford a road bike so I got my self some road tyres for my MTB yes it looks daft but by hell it goes alot better.
My MTB tyres were 26x2.25
The road tyres I'm running are 26x1.95. can I go any narrower in diameter ?
Thanks
Tom

Well, it's certainly possible, depending on your rim width. A quick google throws up these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/michelin-wild-run-r-slick-mtb-tyre/rp-prod48134?gs=1&gclid=COyJxMHgntECFRQ6GwodcYkCCQ&gclsrc=aw.ds

Don't expect narrower tyres to be any faster though, unless you're riding at 20 ish MPH, in any case it's your larger frontal profile vs a road bike which is slowing you down

I used to run 1 inch slicks on my bike when touring and it worked a dream. Until I fell down a storm drain and then changed back to fatter tyres 😉

so its certainly possible, so what do i need to measure the width of the rim?
would 26x1.4 fit or would they be abit sketchy ?

thanks
Tom

You'll be able to use any width you like really. The only problem is MTB rims are often not meant for the high pressures that road tyres are typically inflated to. THerefore, you'll have to use a wider tyre, otherwise the ride will be horrid and you'll end up with lots of punctures (probably)

I'm using 35mm Vittoria Randonneur touring tyres on 19mm width Bontrager Mustang rims on a Fargo. Use the same rims for up to 2.3" 29er tyre too as I've just got the one set of wheels. No issues, would happily run 28s if I had some.

Don't bother with narrow tyres. Get lighter and more supple tyres. Run them tubeless. Don't put too much psi in them. Enjoy comfort and speed.

Something like this:

My road bike has wider rims than my current MTB rims.

You cn probably run 25 or 28c tyres on yours.
