Right, not ridden a road bike for a while, back then there were regular tyres and inner tubes or tubulars (tubs).
Is that still the case?
While I was away they invented tubeless for mtb - wondered if there was anything similar for road?
Whats best bet for avoiding punctures on road?

Tubs and innertube(most popular for normal riders) are still around
Tubless road tires are avaliable now for the road; Hutchinson Fusion 3 for a start.
For avoiding punctures, correct pressure; change tires when they look as though they are wearing, try to avoid things like glass; potholes etc
