I built up a wheel with a rim I got cheap, turned out to be a Stan's alpha, which I run on another bike already.
I don't want to run tubeless on it and am on my 4th soapy attempt to get a Conti seated on it.
Will it ever work?
Nope, road tubeless is just broken. I spent 4 days not so long back trying to seat a set of Schwalbe One's onto a set of tubeless rims. I used every trick in the book and in the end I gave up and sent everything back to CRC as it simply wasn't fit for purpose. Its a total mess.
Ha, interesting, I always struggle to get tyres to seat on my tubeless rims, combination of tubeless ready and non-tubeless tyres, always with latex tubes.
Currently sitting in house while tyres sit at 120psi in the hope they'll pop over bead.
Next step is proper tubeless rim tap instead of electrical tape. Wouldn't be such a problem but latex tubes are famous for finding their way under loose fitting rim strips apparently...
Electrical rim tape and 120psi?
I guess it's not burst yet...
Kool Tool always works for me. And I'm using Hunt rims which are PIA for non tubeless.

WTF a bit more pressure and it popped!
Thanks 13FM
Same problem with my Reynolds Assault tubeless carbon rims. I've only got limited grip in one hand due to previous injuries - but if I ever get a flat its a phone call for a lift home!
Supposedly the technique is to squeeze the tyre into the centre channel....
Even breaking the seal to get the tyres back off my rims is a nightmare.
Not tried one of these, but for about £12 might be worth a shot
@w00dster....that's what I linked to!!!
No problem fitting tyres on tube less rims.
Hi Sarawak - yeah I did an edit to say beaten to it by you with the KoolTool....not sure why it didn't show.
Even breaking the seal to get the tyres back off my rims is a nightmare.
2hours last week - front wheel by hand in 3minutes pushed both sides into the centre - rear wheel involved watching youtube and guy with a huge tyre and a carbon rim and a vice - problem eventually solved after trying different shaped pliers until found a set that would twist the tyre without going near the rim - and my thumbs still hurt...I await the pleasure of trying to put a tube in a borked tyre in the dark with no phone signal
Been running road tubeless for over a year now, on 2 bikes. I've never failed to pop a tube on with my fingers, and at most have had to use a Co2 canister to get it inflated.
Schwalbe Ones on Zonda rims here. They go on a treat and need a bit of effort on the track pump to get them to seat. After that it's all gravy. They even stay up when the sealant dries out just to depress you more.
Spesh roubaix pro 2bliss on DT CR1600, mounted with fingers, pumped up, stayed up, brilliant
Sometimes mine go up like a dream, sometimes a nigthmare.
Hutchinson fusion on a bog-standard Mavic rim last week - just went up tubeless like magic. I used a track pump, but I think I could have got away with a hand pump.
Having lots days to tubeless tyres not inflating (most recently a Schwalbe Pro One), and having tried coke bottles, CO2, compressors and tubeless pumps I've come to realise that when you've tried absolutely everything and it still won't go up then it's always the rim tape.
Hutchinson Intensive on DT r460 20 minutes to do both wheels and have stayed up ever since. Easiest tubeless I have ever done (and to be fair they have all been easy)
Stans have a slightly bigger bead seat diameter. In mtb, this allowed you to convert non tubeless tyres and seat them.
There is a lot of talk about standards for road tubeless in rims and tyres. There are some podcasts on cycling tips covering this if you are interested.
I’ve gone to hutschinson tyres on my specialized road wheels, go on by hand, pump up with a track pump.
I've had no problems getting normal tyres to go up on my alphas, i do have Stan's tape rather than rim strips though, not sure if that has an affect as it's thin and smooth rather than thicker and rubbery/cloth like conventional rim tape?
One unexpected benefit is the tyres then act a bit like tubs, you can ride for quite a few miles on a completely flat tyre (ive climbed the road Aston hill with a completely flat rear).
I've got Hutchinson tubeless tyres on my winter wheels (shimano), that was a bit of a faff, they went on and up easily enough but seemed to take forever for the bead to seal completely, almost felt the need to resort to mastic!
My S-Works Turbo's go up 1st time on the Roval CLX32 rims, and are fitted easily without tools.
I've also had good success with Schwalbe G-one speed 30mm on Hope 20Five rims.
Schwalbe Pro Ones on Stans Grails no problemo.
