Summer road bike was in the lbs today for an upgrade to some lovely new light wheels 🤪.
They were saying its good practice to not use dust caps, as they are more likely to lead to unseating the valve when removing….. was news to me !

Never heard that before and not sure I agree, unless your valve cap is the hose from my lezyne pump.....
Ihave had that happen - the valve core coming out with the dust cap. I hadn't tightened the valve core properly. I guess the same happened to them. Its not the dust cap that is the issue. Its not tightening the valve core properly that is the issue.
Doing the valve up properly helps.
The dust caps on some valves double-up as valve core tighteners so you'd be nuts to leave them off.

A nice dust cap just looks neater IMO, matched to nipples or hubs for the win.
Using dust caps on a road bike is completely unacceptable. It's almost as bad as wearing baggy shorts or fitting SPD pedals. Unless you're keen to experience the 9th circle of hell, then dust caps should be thrown straight in the bin (be sure to throw over your left shoulder for best results).

I had that issue last week on a MTB with Steve Peat valves. However, I would say that IMO Steve Peat valves are pretty poor so I'm more inclined to think it's the design rather than a wider issue.
If dust caps unscrew your valve cores the problem isn’t dust caps.
If you're going full roadie then surely they should be referred to as a "capuchon", then you can colour match them to your bidon and casquette so you fit in with the peleton as they survey the parcours on your sportive.
If you ride the roads around the Surrey hills ...you'll definitely need dust caps...some pals came down last summer , the day before it heavily rained.....they couldn't belive the state of their bikes...Surrey slurry they called it
So I would rather have clean valves ...dust caps for the win...just wished they did dice ones to match my bmx and fatbike

Ditch the washer-nut and valve-stem cap.You are not, under any circumstances, to employ the use of the washer-nut and valve-stem cap that come with your inner-tubes or tubulars. They are only supplied to meet shipping regulations. They are useless when it comes to tubes and tires.
I run valve caps on the road bike to annoy the roadies. Black caps on black valve stems, on a black bike.

Completely pointless on road bikes. Don't know anyone who uses them.
If that's the case then make sure you give them a monthly spray with GT85/WD40 and untighten/tighten.
I've never used the caps, and never had a problem with a valve? Even the MTB's don't have them. The only use for them is to stop the valve punching through the tube in your pocket/pack/storage.
The lockring is annoyingly required if you're using lightweight tube and a pump without a hose as the pump waggling snaps the valve off the tube.
Sorry to disappoint you, but pretty sure no one (other than you) cares what your bike looks like…

Baffling. Obviously roadies have been using tubeless (and disc brakes and thru-axles and erm dropper posts) longer than us MTBers, so we should follow their experienced advice on things like this.

Roadies have been using presta valves longer than mtbers...
A presta valve does need a cap because there's nowhere for the dirt to go when it's closed. A schrader valve will get clogged up with muck much more easily. Back in the day (when we all used tubes), most roadies were on presta and most mtbers were on schrader.

Yes... and the discussion is about valves, which funnily enough are found on all bike wheels regardless of whether they contain a tube.
Dust cap looks so much better.
I do fit them to my winter bike but not on my summer bike, just habit. TBH I have never gone to tubeless on the road, it just wasnt a problem to fix in my eyes
Dust caps are pretty pointless unless they double as valve core removers for tubeless.

Used several Lezyne pumps over the years and had d this happen once or twice... Each time it was on a new tube where the valve hadn't been tightened fully by the factory.
Never used a valve cap on a presta valve (MTB or road) for as long as I can remember. They don't really do anything and it's just one more thing to faff with in the rain on the side of the road. Chuck 'em away!
Do Continental do tubeless valves now? Even if it doesn't have a valve core, any new product from Continental deserves a brief mindful moment and a gentle rub of a valve core tool for luck.
Using a valve cap with a tiny bit of oil in it means that you won't get that embarrassing moment when you try to open the valve to get some air in and it's welded itself together so either you can't open the valve or when you try the whole valve core comes out
