I'm considering this. My mate does it and pulls it off because he's both skinny and quick. It's tempting because of the back pockets, although I do prefer a loose t-shirt in hot weather.
Anyone else do it?
NB this is not a serious thread, I don't really need you to tell me what to wear 🙂
If you're riding a road bike with flat pedals. Otherwise no.
Often yes, because of the pockets.
Although these days i mostly do long sleeves as i like to wipe the sweat along with a bit of sun protection too.
I do when commuting (back in those halcyon days...) and don't like it. I only persist so that the nursery staff don't have to deal with my faded and stained lycra shorts 😉
Yeah, I do this in summer. I prefer a bib short with pockets under baggies and a regular jersey though, I use some Bontrager ones and some fake Raphas.
I do..all the time!!!
I race XC in in my lovely Morvelo tops (usually without baggies, tbh) and will defninitely go for a nice long ride WITH baggies and roadie top!
They fit nicely, have pockets, and keep you cool.
When I go for a 'nice little ride' with my GF in teh summer, my family often take the pi$$ out of me cos i've got 'proer' cycle clothes on... I think sometimes people don't get that it's not because I want to go faster... it's just the right clothes for riding! Wicks sweat, comfy, no chafing...
Do it!!
DrP
Yeah - year round. Add base layers and bib tights under this time of year.
It's ideal, baggies and pads, cos it's trails and I might/do crash. 3 pocket jersey so I can carry my bits n' pieces.
This is what I always wear. For MTB and road 🤣
This is what I always wear. For MTB and road
indeedy. That goes without saying.. i'm not doing lycra shorts even on the road without baggies on top of them !
i’m not doing lycra shorts even on the road without baggies on top of them
Nastiest silly accident I've seen was a chap who caught the leg of his baggies on the drops, toppled him self face first into a barbed wire topped dry stone wall. Made a right mess that did.
It put me off wearing flappy clothes on a drop bar bike!
On flat bars though absolutely, over shorts and a proper Jersey. Mtb ones are just a bit pants and annoying ime.
Off road - hell yes!
On road - no, no, no.
With the re-emergence of the water bottle the cool kids don't diss (and the reduction in pack wearing) it actually makes a lot of sense (in addition to the sense of minimising the number of different clothes for different sport niches which also makes sense).
Minor qualification(s) - bib shorts not just shorts obvs. No one needs to see my arse crack and I'm old so the the small of my back needs to stay warm and not exposed to the elements.
And.....given a choice I'd have a baggier fit jersey than roadie spray on. Partly aesthetic with the baggies and partly I just move around a bit more on a mtb and it feels right. The aussie grit stuff we all ignored when it was expensive the hoovered up as they collapsed like a bunch of vultures picking over the bones is/was perfect for me. Baggies bibs are not that baggie, jersey top is not that spray on. The Cape Epic looks rather than the down with the kids try-hard middle aged man look.
And on the road. Baggies no. If you look bad in lycra go on a diet.
Can’t say I’ve tried it - my road tops got a bit tight last summer so I barely dared wear them out at all - even on the road bike!
If you’re quite slim then maybe you could get away with it (I’m assuming you mean on a mountain bike) - I’d never wear baggies on my road bike.
That said, if it’s just for carrying stuff I’d prefer a hip pack (yea yea - bum bag) and an mtb tech tee type thing.
it's not that you look bad in lycra, just like a sex-offender 🤣 It's fine actually on the bike, but as soon as you stop, and get off... in the cafe/pub or whatever... it's just very odd 😂😂And on the road. Baggies no. If you look bad in lycra go on a diet.
Yep - decathlon do a pair of stretchy baggies, if you go down a size they fit quite closely and finish above the knee. That, with a road jersey (not the best ones because brambles). I hate carrying a pack unless I absolutely have to.
it’s just very odd
Only in the UK, thankfully.
And…..given a choice I’d have a baggier fit jersey than roadie spray on. Partly aesthetic with the baggies and partly I just move around a bit more on a mtb and it feels right.
That is what I do. I just wear a looser fit jersey by going a size or two up and it looks great with looser shorts although in the heat of summer I just wear a road jersey and lycra because it just works better when it is 25 degrees
ill wear full on lycras (only) for XC racing and a 'proper' roadie ride... It's just nicer and more comfy...
But for commuting (even on the road bike) i'll wear fitted shorts..

Name 1 sex offender that's known as someone who wears Lycra?
To answer the OP, yes, it's a bit of an old skool look and if you're going for it your baggies need to be on the snugger end of the spectrum or it really does look a bit silly.
The issue when I do go with it is that I finish the ride thinking the baggies are superfluous, no need for them at all.
Full lycra all the way.
Yes. Trying to carry anything other than a tenner in a baggy mtb jersey just pulls it down my back.
In intermediate conditions, Gabba with armwarmers & a shakedry jacket in my back pocket works for up to 3-4 hrs.
Depends if you consider any jersey with pockets to be a 'road top'
There are plenty of jerseys with pockets, that look perfectly OK with baggies.
In fact none of my jerseys are pocketless, and most get worn on MTB & road rides
Yes that's me summed up.
Nowt wrong with it. Do it all the time. Don't actually own any baggy MTB tops without pockets...where would one stash ones minimalist tools and similarly minimal supplies?
Basically like the look Fontana et al were rocking out a few years ago in World Cup XC...am like a fatter considerably slower version of this...

It's my only style of mtb outfit!!! I'm not gnarly enough to pull off baggy jerseys!
Bibs shorts/tights. Shorts like the ones in the pic above. Then thin/winter base layer, arm warmers and gilet as required.
If it's raining then I go hiking instead!
it’s not that you look bad in lycra, just like a sex-offender 🤣
Seeing as plenty of young men now think it's ok to wear skin-tight trousers (or even leggings) with their skin-tight tops you may be summing up a whole generation.

To some extent I guess that depends on the lycra. I've a set of bibs for the turbo (£10 from px no less) that are very comfy however they start off rather suggestive and become fully see through barring the chamois pad as you sweat.
They're a bit like one of those novelty mugs with a picture of someone on the front, whose clothes "disappear" as the mug warms up.
I'm fully convinced I'd be placed on the sex offender's register if I wore [just] them outside, certainly if I went near a school.
I don't see why you'd wear anything else unless you needed crash protection or you want to look cool in front of girls (note it doesn't work the other way, race lycra looks cooler on a girl even mountain biking; see Jolanda Neff). I gave up with baggies over the top for a while riding on the south downs; although did pay the price catching my seat on the saddle and tearing the arse out of a pair of castelli free aero 5.0 bib shorts (eurgh) getting back in the saddle.
However, I've done that before going from top tube descending on the road anyway.
Jerseys are just tops with a built in bum bag. They're the future.
Name 1 sex offender that’s known as someone who wears Lycra?
erm.....

But you are right - it's not the look most rock to stay stealthy.
As someone into and racing bikes for getting on to 40 years I'm lycra blind. In the last few years though I've struggled a tiny bit with now being associated with mamils in it. Even though I am one - Like a tourist complaining about tourists I don't see myself as a mamil.
If you look bad in lycra go on a diet.
Nah, wear lycra if you like, 10st or 20. Who cares?
If you're a committed roadie you'll look less unusual for it generally but don't think it looks 'good', it's just normalised among cyclists. I don't think it does cycling/cyclists any favours and I expect it's a weird barrier to cycling for many. For pro racers it's one thing and fair enough if you race and are into that side of it, but most leisure cyclists aren't racing.
Rear pockets are handy, I like them. Fitted touring / non-cargo type shorts and an MTB fit jersey with pockets works for me, or a T or LS shirt if I have bags on the bike and don't need the rear pockets. If I'm on my 'best' road bike then I have some closer-fitting shorts that probably don't look much different to lycra shorts from across the road. I haven't worn padded lycra shorts in 6 or 7 years, I had done for a long time because 'it's what we do' then wondered why.
note it doesn’t work the other way, race lycra looks cooler on a girl even mountain biking; see Jolanda Neff
Ok, are you watching for the racing or for something else? Perhaps more women would ride bikes if they didn't think they had to wear tight lycra to fit in or be admired in.
If I’m on my ‘best’ road bike then I have some closer-fitting shorts that probably don’t look much different to lycra shorts from across the road.
So, you're deliberately wearing something that looks like lycra but isn't?
Is it wrong to admit that I don't own any MTB tops?
I basically wear cycle jerseys, some very slim fitting and some less so, but they're all roadie style with pockets at the back
I don't like the idea of MTB tops because the ones I've seen don't have a zip down the front, which I find makes a huge difference to venting when hot
Mols, what would Captain America do?
Appropriate clothing at all times.

How the hell can you wear a loose MTB top with rear pockets? Your stuff woudl flap around all over the place. What are you wearing?
Off road all the time. I don't use the pockets though. I am slim and when it's nice and warm (remember that) it's nice to have a zip. I can't stand looser fitting long sleeve nylon jerseys.
Yes i do but I go up a size so it's not stupidly tight.
So, you’re deliberately wearing something that looks like lycra but isn’t?
Deliberately, because clearly I love that lycra look? No, I'm wearing some black fitted 'baggy' shorts that when fit close I'm sat on the bike and don't flap. They're good for shorter, faster rides on the road bike but aren't owned just for that use. I wear them off the bike in summer. I say 'don't look a lot different to lycra' so you can imagine what I mean vs some Endura Humvees flapping at 20mph.
.
So - you can get tight baggy tops that are like tight baggy shorts, but not tight like tight tight tops. Ok 🙂
Actually that does make sense about the sleeves.
@jameso - do you have a link for those closer fitting 'baggy' shorts?
I'm looking for shorts to wear over bib shorts, when touring (if we ever get to do that again), which are shorter in the leg, so they don't rub the back of my knees.
road jersey and baggy shorts was the de facto look for the MBR cover photo when the editor was always in the cover photo.
Saville's got a wool jersey on there surely? lol
I’m fully convinced I’d be placed on the sex offender’s register if I wore [just] them outside, certainly if I went near a school.
is that because people could see your erection?
@jameso – do you have a link for those closer fitting ‘baggy’ shorts?
Depends on how they fit you but the Kalf shorts are what I wear most for MTB and gravel/touring etc, not sure if they still make them. Close fitting but no more so than Ralph Polo shorts. Cafe du Cycliste shorts for road and summer touring - they're a bit shorter and slimmer fit in the leg than the Kalfs.
Molgrips, I edited out my post about MTB tops and current road jersey sleeves - thought I'd replied to a post that wasn't directed to me.
is that because people could see your erection?
Not at this time of year, it's bloody freezing.
once slightly damp those particular bibs look like I'm wearing lightly tinted clingfilm though so they could see pretty much anything they wished and a lot of things they didn't.
I guess that's why no one bought them and they ended up in px clearance. They're very comfy but not exactly outerwear.
Otoh, most of my "lycra" is fine outdoors without stuff over the top.
Ok, are you watching for the racing or for something else? Perhaps more women would ride bikes if they didn’t think they had to wear tight lycra to fit in or be admired in.
*autistic woke noises*
You realise we're having an entire conversation about whether or not men in lycra look like paedophiles? I.e. registered sex offenders.
You're getting triggered by me saying a pro women's XC racer looks cool in her race kit?
Yawn.
I don’t really a get baggies for riding (I have a couple of pairs) for me they do nothing other than get in the way over the top of my bibs.
I wear my roadie kit both on and off road - but each to their own.
(I ride XC though not Bike Park Wales etc)
I don't think I've ever not worn a road top and baggies, MTB jerseys are ok on an uplift but useless for XC rides without pockets. And I hate back packs
@continuity. Triggered / woke / autistic? Either quite a stretch or a generic response. Your point wasn't the only one that's been quoted to highlight why lycra is a bit odd or off-putting to some. It just is. Wear what you like though..
Your suggestion that I was the toxic wall in the way of women's mountain biking emancipation because I said Jolanada Neff looks cool riding a bike was off the charts.
^ I wasn't quite suggesting that though. Your comment lead into a question about our thoughts on who looks ok / cool / etc in lycra and why is it different for men or women or skinny or fat people. A general questioning of lycra as a default for a lot of leisure cycling. It's going OT and do we need get into it, not really, just a thought. Though we were already onto whether it looks sex-offendery.
Sew pockets on anything.
