Am I correct in assuming that I can fit a compact chainset to my road bike (currently triple chainset)and use the same (105) shifters?
Also, the current chainset is a Bontrager - will a shimano (or any other)fit using the same GXP BB?
The bike's a Lemond Alpe D'Huez, if that helps.
Don't think you can no, compact with it's two rings are spaced differntly to a triple, new left hand shifter required.
I've got a left triple Tiagra shifter (from a 9sp group) with a double front mech (from a 10sp group) all working well, just with a 'dead shift'
I'd be tempted to give it a go and see if you can wind the limit screw in enough to prevent it dropping inside.
It won't be perfect but may do you
Yes, the shifters will work fine. The spacing between rings on road double or compact is exactly the same as a triple.
Just set it up so the shifter uses the positions that would have been inner and middle ring, then you can't select the outer position as you'll be into the mech end stop.
Be aware though that if your shifters are the 5600 model the ratchet mechanism is susceptible to breaking when used in this way.
OK, excellent. Thanks. Anyone any ideas about the chainset/BB?
I happily stand corrected, apologies to the OP. You learn something new everyday.
