It's starting to get grim.

I've always made do with some ageing gore over shoe things but they are not the warmest or that waterproof.

Anyone seen any good deals on winter road boots/shoes or can recommend a decent shoe cover for the depths of winter?

Cheers

BBB Heavy Duty overshoes are great.

Not waterproof, but nice and toasty.

@chakaping, how do you find getting them on?

have always gone for ones with zips/velcro on the back but, they then typically fail at that point too.

My son has some decent ones from here: www.spatzwear.com

They all have a hole in the top so water will get in eventually. I quite like the Lusso windtex overshoes, warm, water resistant and reasonably priced.

Part of the reason I love them is they were easier to get on/off with more chunky, less fragile zips than my other overshoes.

One of those Goldilocks bike products IMO

https://www.planetx.co.uk/products/carnac-parky-reflective-toe-cover are great for visibility as a retro-reflective moving part, still running a pair I bought ~3+ years ago, with a spare pair in the spares box.

Winter boots. Get a good deal on a pair and they probably save you money in the long run when they last as long as 3 or 4 pairs of overshoes.

Winter boots are where its at

I ran overshoes for years until i had enough of them, pain to put on and off, get damagaed if you need to walk in them, having to hang them up somewhere at work to dry them, cost around £30 a pair and i was getting one winter's use out of them

Took the plunge and bought a pair of Shimano MW7 Goretex boots when they were on offer 2 years ago, easy to get on and off, nice and toasty, keep my feet nice and dry, wouldnt go back to overshoes now

@mrb123, would be ideal but not many deals about.

I forget every year to look for some in spring.

Going to take a punt on the BBB's. Would love some Spatz but i believe not the most fun to get on/off.

Cheers guys.

I've got a set of MW702s waiting for me at home right now! First set of winter boots, took the plunge after the zip broke on my overshoes on Wednesday. Looking forward to toasty dry feet at the weekend.

Winter boots +1, one of those "it just works" purchases.

1) They're actually waterproof, the sole, the upper, the collar, all waterproof. When it's actually wet add gripgrab gaiters to seal the collar.

2) That it, what more did you want? Give them a scrub and soak with DWR re-proofing spray a couple of times a winter and they'll last for years.

My northwaves are 10 years old, the Velcro has now failed so I have to put a strap round them. Probably about time I replaced them!

BBB are great, but you know the answer is winter boots.  Loved my Shimano MW7's I went and got RW5's for the road bikes.

Sidi goretex boots. Warm when really cold, waterproof, but socks wick water into them so you end up with warm  but wet feet. Still like them more than overshoes.

Cheap neoprene over shoes with velcro not a zip. Keep feet warm cost about £15 from planet x, will last a few years. No need to spend anymore. Less ideal for MTB but for road it's a no brainer.

Not really answering your question but MTB boots are way warmer than road shoes with decent booties, which I've given up on.

There are road boots too 🤣. Although after the morning, I’d add some silk sock liners as feet were cold in said boots. Probably as I wore my roubaix bib 3/4’s and some long socks that were too thin. Normally merino but not today. Have to stop the blood cooling on the way down to the feet. Of course I saw people cycling in shorts and trainers 🥶. I was cold just looking!

My pro roadie friend wears spatz in preference to the stuff he gets given. Probably the way if you want the best or have to ride.

I find that decent neoprene ones work well. Think mine are dhb or planet x. I don't find they last if you ever way in them so don's spend a lot. Merino socks and tights to keep lower leg warm as well.

I buy the Endura Neoprene Road overshoes. They last a couple of years and usually cost around £20 in the sales.

These:

A thin pair of socks under a pair of neoprene socks is great.

I thought about winter shoes for several years and finally pulled the trigger on a pair of the PX Das Boots a few years back, to use on my commuter hybrid with SPD pedals. Made winter riding far less faff and comfy for my feet, shame they stopped stocking them, along with the brilliant PX Magma jacket.
