I have ridden on a selle rolls saddle on my old bike which is good for 50+ miles for me but gets uncomfortable after that. Decided to get modern saddle for long distances for my newer road bike and went for a Fizik Aliante VSX which wasnt cheap by my standards. After perservering it just isnt comfortable enough (inc 85 mile ride). MTB saddle that fits me and comfortable all day is the WTB ones I think pro V when I bought.
Bit of a how long is a piece of string but any thoughts on alternatives (sub £100), ps anyone want to buy the fizik!!
ps I am experienced and know how to adjust saddle, use chamois cream etc. just looking for saddle options 🙂
Saddle fit is very personal, try and find a shop that will lend them out.
I use WTB Rockets on MTB, Specialized Romin Evo on road. I need a bit of curve to my saddles, flat ones don't work for me but clearly do for other people.
The Romin is pretty much perfect for me - I can do 12+ hours without any issues at all.
I’ve used a rolls saddle for a couple of years, was good.
i find a charge spoon slightly better.
and a brooks B17 better still.
buy a 2nd hand brooks off ebay, if you don’t like it you would get most of your cash back reselling.
The fact they’ve been making the same thing in unchanged form for a century should tell you something.
If you can, find a shop that does trial saddles, I know Spec, Fizik and Selle Italia have fleets of saddles you can try at some shops.
And re. the Aliante, which model and how much? 🙂
Get yourself a SMP Dynamic or similar. Bloody brilliant!
Do you mean WTB Pure V? I have always found them to be super comfortable. I struggled to find a new one when my old Pure died. But have now managed to get 2 in error!
I'm either keeping on for a future spare or might send it back (it was shipped over from Germany) if you are interested.
B17 on offer from wiggle at £63, after measuring sit bones looks about the right with and at that price worth a punt, comes highly recommended from big boned and big arsed types 🙂 Now to sell the Fizik!!
It's v personal so any recommendations are guff IMO (albeit Brooks have a lot of fans and trial via ebay is inexepensive)
Except buying what works for you on your other bike.
Brooks sadles work by the leather stretching and sagging. They have a nut under the nose for lengthening the frame to take out excessive stretch. I know they have their fans but wouldn't a big rider stretch one too much?
Charge Spoon for me, very comfortable and affordable too.
I eventually tried going for a wider saddle (155mm) after the Fizik online thing suggested it, they base it on weight, riding style, sit bone width, but it gives different results from the Specialized arse-o-meter.
Probably just luck of the draw but the 155mm Aliante R3 Open that I bought has been pretty good over distance so far, better with some posh Castelli shorts : )
Have been through a ton of saddles over the years, Brooks B17, B72, Charge Spoon, Specialized BG of varying widths, WTB Rocket V, Pure V, Fizik Gobi, various sofas. Seem to have settled (!) on the SDG Bel Air. As ever, nothing more personal than saddle choice. Don't write off MTB saddles for road use if they fit and work.
yes its a personal thing, a few years ago I got a bike that came with a Bel Air, it felt like sitting on a razor for me, specialized saddles were even worse, ifthe B17 doesnt work I might look at finding a pure V as i have had no bother with that on my MTBs
a fellow big bloke you know has a week old Brooks c19. you are more than welcome to borrow it for a while to see if it fits.
Now I'm normally a big fan of a charge spoon, had them in all of my bikes but for some reason I can get used to the one I've just fitted to My road bike .
I'm not sure if it's because I can't get it in t he perfect position due to the seatpost adjustment but it's not very comfy .
I'm doing this at the moment, it's bloody irritating.
Currently on a selle Italia SLR xc, which is ok to 80km two days running. Will see how it copes with 200km this weekend.
I found the older flatter Fizik Aliante good for me at 110kg for 24 hour road events, so when they brought out the later versions and VSX i tried them and found them a very different fit and couldn't get on with them.
Between my drop bar bikes i tend to use either the older Aliante or Brooks Camium C17.
Old Brooks B17 leather saddles are ace, but only if you are sitting more upright, if you are able as a big lad to still get quite low at front, then they have some limitations as they not so good. More upright and they are like a sofa (for me)!
tried to message you stuart, but the stupid ****ing bastard messaging thing on here wont let me.
so here you go
hello stuart
all good mate
saddle cost me £95 a week ago from wiggle
how does £75 delivered sound
tony
How about £70 mate 😉 (whats the joke about a scotsman and a yorkshirman arguign over a penny)
Given the saddles you've said you like, I can suggest Specialized ones (143 or 155 likely - get measured) or possibly a Charge spoon. I liked WTBs in the past and find the Spesh Phenom (older version mind) really good for pretty much any distance.
