Not sure why my posts never post the first time, until I re write and post again...

Anyway. GF lives in Putney and I'm thinking about riding there instead of driving/train. Google Maps is suggesting crossing the river on Vauxhall Bridge then again on Putney bridge. With no road riding experience in the city I'm looking for the most sensible route. Or take the MTB and follow alongside the river?

You don't need a MTB to follow along the river. But I would strongly caution against this unless you are traveling at something like 5am Sunday morning. Thames path is choc a bloc.

I'd just follow city mappers "quiet route" suggestion - those are usually pretty good if you want to avoid nasty junctions. Or the 'normal route' should be ok too. The fast route options get a bit more dicey IMO.

It's taking you on the cycle super highway so probably the best route for you.

Santander Cycles app is pretty good with routes. Plug in the nearest docking station locations to you / her and show route, it'll give you 3 options: Quiet, Normal and Quick.

Quiet occasionally has little foibles like doing 500m of back roads or towpath to avoid 50m of main road which can be annoying but normal is usually a decent combination.

Google Maps is picking out the cycle superhighway routes which is fair enough but at the north end of Vauxhall Bridge it's a pain turning left (the CSH is on the right hand side of the bridge). However becasue it uses the protected lane all up Oval, all along the river and then back across Battersea, it's probably overall the most pleasant - that run along the southern bank of the Thames to Wandsworth Bridge is nice too.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did wonder about turning left on the north side of Vauxhall bridgeI might plan a route heading to the oval then stay south of the river to go through Battersea Park, then cross the river on Albert Bridge perhaps. Or just stay south of the river and hope the path is quite. It would be at about 5 pm on a Saturday.

It all depends on the time of day, and where you cross the river.  I'd go Greenwich foot tunnel and the CS3 to Westminster and pick up CS8 to Wandsworth.  All on purpose built cycle lanes, pretty direct and safest. If you are not that used to road riding riding in traffic and other road users, this seems the best option.

Vauxhall bridge is pretty unpleasant to approach and cross. I'd cross earlier, probably Lambeth which doesn't segregate you from the traffic but it seems to be over and done with quicker.

I've done this route a few times.

South circular is perfectly rideable. I did it many times. But I’d also recommend the embankment super highway then up to chealsea and down kings road and over Putney Bridge.

I used to commute across Vauxhall Bridge for a couple of years and still work near it, it has fully segregated cycle lanes and south of it is pretty riddled with cycle lanes too.

Not the quietest route but I'd pass through Vauxhall & rightish towards new covent garden /Battersea dogs home and over Battersea bridge , southside of fulham and onto Putney bridge.

That's my usual commute (I only go as far as Monument though). The bits between Chelsea Bridge and Putney are non-segregated and some of them are pretty narrow / sketchy if you're not used to it.

Not sure of the best way to get from Greenwich to Tower Hill - did a FNRttC out that way which went past the Cutty Sark, I think we went straight down the A200 - don't recall anything other than a bike of paint (cycle lane wise).

From Tower Hill, I'd be getting on the superhighway and staying on it until Chelsea Bridge, then crossing over onto the blue paint highway that goes along the Battersea Road, through Wandsworth & onto Putney.

Or, I'd just get the ferry...

Lots of options then. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll give it a go in a few weeks and report back.

Fastest route is Greenwich to New Cross to Peckham to Brixton to Wandsworth to Putney.
