Got a weeks holiday booked in October just south of F/W and just wondering if it's worth taking the road bike?
Any locals care to share any nice roads?
By nice, I mean roads that I'm not climbing endless mountains, or likely to be killed by traffic!

The problem you'll have is that there aren't that many roads..., and the few A roads are fast/busy and often narrow. Not so many hills though, mostly glen/coast roads.

That's what I thought, looking at a map there's the A82, and the circular route around Loch Leven, which may be an option in both directions!

Head out towards Mallaig/Lochailort and get a train back. Or you can get a wee passenger ferry over Loch Linhe and ride back.

OK - back at the computer now.

The A82 isn't the best for cycling, although it does have it's fair share of LEJOGers. You can get the ferry across Loch Linnhe at Corran (it's free for pedestrians and bikes) which gives you lots of nice riding on the Ardgour peninsula - your scope is only limited by your fitness and enthusiasm.

The Loch Leven circular is a fine ride too. Not too busy and a few hills on the South side to keep you interested. There is a cycle track alongside the road all the way from the bridge at Ballachullish to Glencoe Village should you wish to avoid the cars.

The NCN route from Ballachulish to Oban is partially complete and might be worth an explore.

You could follow the minor road to Gairlochy, then all of the way along Loch Arkaig. Nice scenery, and hardly any traffic at all. Though its a dead end, so you'll have to come back the same way.

Last weekend I rode from Tyndrum, through Glencoe and back round via Appin to Tyndrum. It's a good ride with some nice Sustrans sections but the road itself isn't too bad if you pick a quiet time.

Take the ferry over at Corran and you'll find a whole world of deserted roads, stunning scenery......and midges! Have fun.

Thanks for all the advice, looks like I will be taking the bike after all.
