This isn't meant to be antagonistic and has possibly/probably/undoubtedly been done before, but - is there no possibility of a separate forum?

Now, I have nothing against roadies, it doesn't exactly 'ruin' the forum having roadie threads in here, but at the same time, I (and I suspect others) have no interest in reading about road riding.

So, at the end of the day, it's no massive deal, maybe it doesn't bother others, it's just a thought. Maybe roadies would embrace it too??

I think a separate forum for Mountain biking would be more appropriate these days 🙂

It's from reading about road bikes/riding in the bike section that I now have a road bike, and enjoy road riding. Had there been a separate forum, I'd never have clicked on it.

The world is divided enough as it is. Let's not separate our baggy and skintight clad brothers and sisters.

So long as 'overview' showed all the sections jumbled together in last post order I wouldn't mind separate sections for those that like to filter.

It's not always obvious - as I said, it doesn't ruin the forum per se, I can always click off the thread again

Have never 'got' the 'it's all bikes' thing - I've not read Singletrack mag for a while, but doubt it's littered with features about 10lb carbon race bikes.

I'm into mtb'ing. That's where it ends.

+1 and I genuinely believe it too.

If there were different subsections I'd never bother to check them individually; I like to just click on 'Forum' and have a scan through all the lovely random threads that have been posted. It pleases me that they vary from "What tyres for..." to "BabyTrackWorld Advice please.." - and I read both types! 🙂

i would like seperate forums for road, mtb, drivetrain, frame, camelback, wheels/tyres, drivetrain, arm warmers etc

If i need to know about armwarmers then i can find the section all about arm warmers without having to wade through 'what knee warmers for the commute.' etc

Thanks

The darkside is strong I'm afraid. However tipping at full tilt through the ferns on Holmbury hill at 8am on Sunday reminded my just how much more enjoyable MTB really is. Think the forum is fine as is though.

No, not feeling trollish crikey, so back in your box.

No need for any other hot under the collar answers either - I said it was no biggie and just a thought.

I'd genuinely like to see a separate forum, if the general concensus says otherwise, then it's not a problem.

I love both so like having them together. Im not 100% roadie so prefer to dabble a little on the occasional road post on here. Theres not that many posts on balance anyway is there? Now the tour is over there will be a lot less. I can't understand how somebody can love one and not the other if your passionate about cycling.

All elements of mountain biking? fat bikes? fixed gear off road? XC orienteering? cyclocross?

Actually I do have a view- Isn't Road just a natural progression from MTB in the cyclists career?

As such they are better off together.

Why so hard to understand?

I'm passionate about mtb'ing, the fact that involves using a mode of transport vaguely resembling road riding is coincidental to me.

I'm sure plenty of MX riders aren't particularly interested in reading about Moto GP

Amen

Agree with most of the comments above and the other threads that have already asked the same question. I ride on and off-road and the great thing about this place is the mix. I can tolerate Bike v Chat forum but wouldn't want to get like so many other sites out there that have dozens of different forum.

Ah, you need a third forum for that. 😉

I hate separate forums - try looking at BikeRadar and the million subforums it's got, it's hideous.

Be careful what you wish for. Look at MTBR and RoadBikeReview and just see how many forums you could end up having to scan through to find the threads you do or do not want to read.

Over the years that I have been on STW I have seen it go from almost exclusively off-road chat to maybe 50-50 now which is interesting as it is fronted by an MTB mag.

Just shows how successful the forum has been and maybe indicates the number of off-roaders being seduced by the dark side. I came the other way and must admit enjoy all forms of cycling which I'm sure a lot of people here do. Each discipline has its pros and cons and I find doing one usually helps performance in the other.

This. I remember the halcyon days when there wasn't even a separate Chat Forum and we just put "[OT]" in our thread topics.

Perhaps all darkside threads should have "[ROAD]" in the title?

certainly how it happened with me, and a lot of my friends who ride. One reason being that as we got busier, road became more appealing due to less faffage. Be warned though, this is a slippery slope - taking up running is the next step 😀

When I first joined here I found the jumble of topics err, a jumble.

I've got used to it now but I still think some sub divisions would be beneficial.

How about

Wheels and tyres
Drivetrain
Brakes and other components
How tos

You wouldn't even need to segregate them by type of bike. 😉

Oh and I've always been a roadie who's had an MTB since 94.

It's a nose bleed waiting to happen.

Road cycling is having a renei..rene..rena..is quite popular at the moment. Come Autumn it'll be cyclo cross everything. Then over winter the road bikes will be put to one side. There's time and room for everything.
One forum.

On a side note, there has been a bit of whinging that not enough is being done to promote mountain biking. So probably best not divide the members. You never know some might have rekindled their interest and be looking to set up a race series 🙂

How many times has the 'sub divisions' question cropped up on here, even when you used to be STR? Blimey, you'll be wanting a Coffee Forum next... 😉

GoFar/STW has always had the jumble of topics in one place (or, at least, very few places). It has built a character of its own that seems to be successful; no need to change that base character IMO and changing the format to multi-fora would change that identity.

Have been an occasional roadie for a few years now, only dabbling, could give it up anytime i wanted, but yesterday I had a day off work to go riding so I drove to cumbria.....and I did a road ride. I feel a line has been crossed. I can only think I was influenced by the tdf

The forum turnover is too fast for anyone that doesn't live on here. IMHO it limits the potential success of the forum, and dilutes the content. If there is enough road content, it should get it's own forum. TBH I don't understand why people can't find a road bike forum to discuss road bikes on, I am sure there are enough of them 🙂

I've seen too many forums for various sports, interests and owner's clubs flop completely because they weren't busy enough to maintain the huge number of sub forums the admins had stupidly decided to create. A site like Pistonheads for example is massive, has a huge amount of traffic as it's based on a popular interest (fast cars) so is able to pull off plenty of sub forums. However this one is only just posted in enough to cope with the separate Bike and Chat subforums, so more is just going to make it feel quieter and split the posters up.

It says 'bike forum' at the top which is perfect to me.

It likely says that at the top of most motocross, enduro, motorbike, and BMX forums too - but as it says that in the context of a motocross, enduro, motorbike, or BMX forum people seem to get that 'bikes' doesn't mean banana barred tour bicycles.

Could just put all roadie stuff in the chat forum, but it'd dilute the chiropractic renewable holy communist ghost content, so I propose the roadie threads go here: http://forums.roadcyclinguk.com/ 😆

I don't have the remotest interest in road bikes. Tried that, and nearly died from the shear spirit-crushing boredom of it.

As a result of this, I simply don't bother reading threads about road bikes. Same as I wouldn't bother reading a thread about rugby. Or floorboards. Or vegan recipes.

I understand this is a fairly revolutionary concept 😉

I'd love to see Road as a separate forum. Or just all moved to Chat since it's all offtopic for a mountain bike forum. But hey, it took years to get a separate "for sale" and "wanted" forum and even that most obvious change in the world seemed to upset people, so it'll never happen.

I'm also not even slightly interested in roadie stuff. Rarely open an obvious road thread (thought this one was going to be a bitchfest - disappointed 😈 )

No need for a separate section - confine it to the chat/argument arena perhaps. Or the For sale section under the thread - For Sale: Fun - no longer required as i ride a road bike 😀
