Road racing Q - getting cold....

I've just watched Tour of Britain.

They were talking at the end of the peleton slowing as they got cold on long descent and in the rain.

Many riders were in really mesh like tops etc.

Is there not a time when cold muscles and discomfort slows a rider more than the extra drag of a gilet/warmer top/longs or a sweatyness from wearing a warmer layer?

It seems fashion dictating things a little....?

It wasn’t cold for most of the race though I believe. There was riders taking gilets etc off in the earlier stages. Plus I’d imagine and it’s hard to stop to put on your rain jacket whilst you’re chasing a breakaway at 60kph.

They were all mostly pretty wrapped up when departing Aberdeen on Sunday but quickly stripped off.

Aero is important.

They'll be nicely warmed up at that point and a few minutes going downhill won't take that much out of them. Plus, the time taken to put on a gilet/jacket will be more than any losses due to cold.
