Is it considered good etiquette to race with 'guards in the wet, or do folk just not bother and get on with it?
No, you won't be allowed to race. It'll be classified by the Commissaire as equipment not required in order to compete (or some similar words).
As above, they are banned for safety reasons.
They are banned. In bad weather, I ride to the race with SKS Raceblade Longs, remove, race and replace to ride home.
In the bunch, you just get a gritty jetwash. Wear good glasses and wash the grit out of your mouth. Character building stuff.
Cool ta, should probably remove any mounts as well then (I have those caliper ones off SKS raceblade long)?
Glasses are not a problem, all sorted.
I leave the brake caliper mounts on and the Commisaires have not commented this season. I don't use one on the front of the bike - I save this one and use it on a second road bike. So one rear facing on the front and two on the back. I did race with the short rear inner extension last week because I forgot to remove it! Again no comments.
I do unscrew the QRs and remove all of the axle mountings as these could catch on a close wheel. Conversion is a two minute job. They really are superb kit. A small spare rounded end to cover the exposed clip for racing and they would be absolutely perfect.
Cheers TiRed, I've taken the axle ones off. 2 minute job anyway so may as well take off the caliper ones to be on the safe side.
Removing the caliper mounts requires wheel removal due to tight clearances (unless you undo the brake bolt completely. I don't bother and would be wary of fiddling with brake mounting immediately before a race. Honestly, there are lots more things poking out of bikes to be worried about!

Ready to work on your winter tan
Isn't that photo one of the riders stuck behind Greg Lemond when he had 'stomach problems'? 😀
If I'm that close to many wheels then I'll go home happy 🙂
