I have another Q - I have a Veloce 8 Speed setup - I need to replace the BB I think. I will prob have to remove it to answer my question but its a triple - 2 axle lengths are 111 and 115.5 - I guess I would be going 115.5?

If my failing memory serves me right, I think the axle length is stamped onto the right hand BB flange - might be worth just pulling the chainset off and seeing what is currently fitted. Probably will be the 115.5mm, but worth checking.

Erm why not measure it? (sorry if I have missed something). 115 does make sense though.

You "think" it needs replaced - why?

The creaking is still going on. I am convinced its either the BB or the axle interface. I have knackered the thread on the drive crank as the metal is old and soft trying it get it off with my crank extractor. I need to get a bit of wood and tap it off - I'll try that first but need to get the Campag BB tool and so for and extra £15 I can get a new Veloce BB. Its 3 years old but hasn't been ridden recently. I can use the spare BB eventually 🙂 If that makes sense ? It now creaks both sides and having had that on previous bikes I think I'm in the right area. I want to take the BB out anyway to clean and grease. So I can always send it back if its the wrong size - just wanted to get all the stuff I might need and do it all at one time 🙂

Aye OK well up to you still bet there's nowt wrong with the bb.

Oh and metal doesn't go soft with age 😉 ...you'll need more than a tap with a bit of wood to get the crank off, ideally a stein cutter & puller.

Quick fix...pull LH crank off, pull LH bb cup out, spray lube shell/thread interfaces, reassemble.

Re the creaking - it's not the lower headset race is it? Sounds daft but it's one of those creaks that reverberates through the frame and often feels like the BB. I had the entire chainset/BB in bits and regreased trying to fix a creak once, it turned out to be the bottom cup of the headset and I've seen it on customers bikes too.

Seems pretty much anything can cause a creak (tho rarely worn.corroded bearings).

BB/pedal/chainring bolt threads still the most common cause OME/O!

Yup cynical - sorry bad terminology - I think I should have said it was corroded as It stripped the thread out 🙁 BTW - checked crank bolts and pedals in the last 2 weeks 🙂

I'll bash the inside of the crank with wood and see if I can at least loosen it - I was def going to take the non-drive crank off (unless I also strip the thread off 🙁 )

I expect the BB is OK but having been a boy scout I am always prepared 😉

Crazy - def not the headset as removed and cleaned when I got the bike 3 weeks ago as had to setup the ride position from sratch 🙂 Will def look again though 🙂

I had a really annoying creak that turned out to be a cable ferrule rubbing against a cable stop. Took 4 months to track down and required removing BB, headset, peadls, pivot bolts and bearings.

Campag triples are 115mm axles apart from Chorus and Record IIRC which were 111.

BTW my clicking/creaking is gone! Replaced BB which was rusted up and very rough with little bit of play - new bb, cleaned threads in BB, cleaned cranks. Had to remove the drive crank with a chisel as a wedge driver but came off a treat 🙂 Reckon it was either the bearings or poss creaking from the rust between the non-drive sleeve and BB shell? Anyway I am tickled pink 🙂

I have to disagree! And the BB needed replacing as it was def on the way out - rusty water coming out of it! BTW I have been doing my own servicing on my MTB's since I have been mountain biking (1992) and been road biking now for 5 years so I do have some experience of these sort of things Cynic-al 🙂

I am not putting the old BB back in to prove the point however 😉

Worked in bike shops on and off (mostly off) since 1988.

It's appealing to think the bearings cause it but there's more logic to other causes.
