Was out yesterday for a wee spin - feet freezing - Specialized BG Elite shoes and porrelle dry socks wern't enough!
Any recommendations or advice for a relative roadie newbie? Don't have the problem when using flat pedals - must be something about the lack of foot movement?
cheers
Are the bigger socks causing your feet to feel squashed in the shoes? This can lead to reduced circulation and cold feet in itself.
FWIW, I use Pro H20 Endure (IIRC) as they're thin enough for just wind proofing in the cold and good enough to keep the rain off for an hour or so when it, er rains.
I like the PRO Blaze. I suffer with very chilly feet and these are lovely and warm.

Same issue here - coming from MTB I was relying on Sealskins. I bought those ^^ planet X overshoes and wore thinner socks - its a revelation I tell thee, esp[ecially if your feet get wet.....
While losing sensation in my big toes this morning I couldn't help wondering why no-one has invented a sock made from windstopper material. It was pretty cold this morning but my winter smelly and gore windstopper kept my top half toasty, winter bib tights and gore-tex shorts took good care of bottom half, yet despite a pair of socks and some neoprene overshoes my feet still got cold. I usually give them a good wiggle so they get plenty of movement, and I'm generally not a cold person anyway, but an hour on the (road) bike in this weather and my toes go.
I reckon a thin windstopper material, backed with some fluffy fleecy type stuff would do the job of thick socks and overshoes.
If you're still having trouble even with overshoes you can also tape up the vents on the toes with insulation tape too.
the planet x ones failed me on a 70 miler on sunday, upgrading to endura mt500's now...

Because its easier to fit something over a shoe to maintain a bigger air gap (more insulation) and not round a foot with a slightly inflexible fabric (compared to normal sock material) with thick seams.
Prendas here too, perfect.
Most 5mm neoprene overshoes should be similarly warm. Unless you want them to protect against rain too, there's not much that can go wrong, and budget ones should be just fine. Against rain, I've found that zippers over the instep tend to leak more than heel zippers/velcro.
When it's really cold I'm sometimes wearing 3mm and 5mm overshoes on top of each other. Very toasty. As long as feet, hands and head are cosy, not much can go wrong ...
I have these

I'm a road newbie too and have been amazed at how cold my feet get...even when riding in the snow on my MTB I still wore shorts, merino base layer and a thin jacket.
I've just bought some Campag toe covers in the CRC sale...not used them yet but hope that they do the job.
thanks guys - very helpful - socks and overshoes ordered.
cheers
I have the BBB ones like Trickydisco also - incredibly warm to the extent that I wear thin polycotton sock inside the shoes and STILL have sweaty feet at the end of the ride. Not guaranteed waterproof though.
