Just bought a new frame and its disc only so need to weigh up the current options.
Used avid bb7's before and liked them but just wondering is it worth going for hydraulics over cable or are the hybrid systems any good.
I currently don't have any bits to build it up with so looking to start from scratch.
If anyone has the electronic shifting items i'd be interested to here if it was worth the extra expense.
Thanks
As was once the case with MTB, once you go hydro, you'll never look back.
BB7's are fine, but not a patch on 685/785 hydros. I think the largest compliment you can give to a component is that you just forget that it's even there. That's just what I've had from almost 6000 miles on my R785's and 1500 on my R685's. Flawless, reliable, self adjusting, powerful and well modulated braking in ANY conditions...accept no substitutes.
"Cable disc brakes are fine, but not a patch on 685/785 hydros."
this.
Tried the RS385/785's on a Genesis Datum recently. Night and day difference to the cable discs I am used to.
Would buy a set immediately if I was not saving for a new car.
Got to agree, have TRP spryes on my tripster and 785s on my Derosa, the 785s are leagues ahead. Just wish i could afford to upgrade the tripster.
I'm currently running some old Shimano mechanical's and after my recent trip have decided they need to be changed. I'm currently running a 180 disk on the front. I take it this doesn't make a difference to the caliper?
My current caliper sits on a bracket that then fits to the fork?
Also, can someone please tell me what's the difference between 685 and 785?
Looking at 785's they come with MTB levers?
I've got bb5s and I assumed they'd be crap compared to the hydraulics I've run on mountainbikes for God knows how long, but... they're absolutely fine. No compulsion to change them at all.
I hired a Cannondale Synapse with the 785 discs fitted when I was in Gran Canaria recently. The brakes were absolutely outstanding on some pretty long and fast descents over there.
I'm currently trying to talk myself out of upgrading the TRP's on my Diverge to 785's but failing miserably!
685 are 11 speed road with for use with cable operated mechs and 785 are 11 sp road for use with DI2 electronic shifting.
Also 685's here. Absolutely amazing. My road bike feels dangerous in comparison in the wet
Cheers Daffy!
I wish there was a hydro disc option that didn't include shifters, I like down tube shifters so the only option is cables... isn't it?
Nope - TRP do a hydro disc road lever with no shifters...

Not very cheap though!
You could run your cables to the down tube shifters instead of the STIs. Nuts, but you could 🙂
Or you could get SRAM CX1..

I sold my Litespeed for this exact reason.
What felt perfectly normal for so long, even when running cable discs, felt practically dangerous after I'd become used to using the 785s for a few months. I'm sure it'd be fine once you readjusted again, but why would you want to become (re)accustomed to something your mind tells you is rubbish?
how do the hydro trp's compare to the shimano's?
As was once the case with MTB, once you [s]go hydro[/s] learn how to set brakes up properly, you'll never look back.
😛 😉

I had HyRd's before the Shimano's, the HyRd's where OK the Shimano's are better.
All just what I want to hear! Got a box of 685's waiting to be fitted to the commuter at home. Now just need to make the time to do it! (Bike is internally cabled so have a slight fear of the unknown having not dealt with internals before)
Another thumbs up for the shimano rs685. Had spyres for a while which were just about ok, but these are on a different level. Really confidence inspiring.
Got a set of RS685s on the commuter. I took advantage of the low Euro and ordered from Germany at significant saving, at the time.
Very good brakes, ime.
18 months on a set or trp hylex on my cx ss.. And they are superb 🙂 🙂
Anyone else with the Shimano 685/785s find them real pigs to set up?
The cable routing, the bleeding - all seem to have been made very awkward to me!
Please say it's not just me.. I've done loads of mtb discs and road bike cables before, but never had such frustrations as with these!
(Obviously will be worth it in the end 🙂 )
Running TRP Spyres here with some (probably too heavy for road use) Icetech rotors and they are unbelievably powerful and zero hassle.

Good to know. I've found the stock rotors and pads to be utter junk, so have ice techs and EBC pads waiting to be fitted.
Got a CX bike that came with ProMax Render cable disc brakes , they were downright dangerous at first but did improve a bit . I swapped them for TRP Spyres and found that they were no better . Got a Trek Domane with 685s and they are completely different , great stopping and modulation with virtually no effort at the lever.Way better than cable discs or calipers
Juin Tech R1 here, hybrid option.
Very good, much better than bb7.
