It's probably been discussed, but I need to change my large chainring on Shimano 105 Compact. I cannot find a 50 tooth chainring to purchase. I can get a 52t.

Is it possible to run a 52x34 front crankset, or is this too big a change for the front derailleur? Obviously I would have to make the chain longer and raise the front derailleur.

50T chainring as an unobtainium? Sounds a bit of a joke...

What BCD is your cranks? Or if you don't know what model it is...

Cheers!
I.

Thanks, I did find those. My vanity says black. Any answer on the 52t compatibility question would be great.

You’ll be fine, you’ll just have to lift the front derailleur slightly to clear the marginally larger diameter chainring.

50T chainring as an unobtainium? Sounds a bit of a joke…

Welcome to the UK bike industry in 2021... Double whammy of COVID pandemic and Brexit red tape is causing severe shortages of a lot of stock. Lots of Shimano products have 3-6 month waiting times from the distributor, Madison, if as a shop you were to order right now...

In fact, if you can get hold of Shimano from anywhere, it’s a better investment than gold or property right now!

Any answer on the 52t compatibility question would be great.

Road front derailleurs are designed to deal with a 16T jump max... They simply don’t work effectively with anything larger, and will run horrendously at one end of the gearing or the other (or both!) with an 18T jump. I’ve seen many people try it unsuccessfully, as the ability of the chain to shift between the 2 rings is also heavily compromised. YMMV but as a former shop owner that has seen several people choose to ignore Shimano’s and my own advice, I can say with confidence that not one of them could make it work acceptably!

I was all set to buy an R7000 compact chainset to replace the 105 5800 that came on my Cube, but in the last ~12 months, the cost of the chainset increased from ~£90 to ~£155! 😮

I ended up buying 6800 rings a few months back from Merlin and have them waiting in the spares box, which are compatible out of the box, £75 IIRC total for 34 and 50 rings.

Literally just looked out of curiousity, £120 for an R7000 chainset at PBK and in stock, grab it while you can! https://www.probikekit.co.uk/bicycle-cranksets-and-chainrings/shimano-105-r7000-chainset/11746895.html

Cheers MBoy, That was my worry. I've order the pricy 50t chainring. Play it safe and perfectly happy with the gear ratio.
As a cyclist I'm pleased people are taking it up. Hopefully bike shops are doing well off of it. It's such a shame how difficult parts have become to find, and the supply and demand price hike that comes with it.

Welcome to the UK bike industry in 2021…

I'm living in UK for last 15 years. I know realities, but that is not the case in that particular one.
As without voodoo and black magic I found UK stock of mentioned chainring in 45 seconds with a little help of google and ebay search...

Cheers!
I.

Funny thing IvanMTB. I am far from computer illiterate, and I searched and could only find silver ones. That included an ebay search. A little baffling for me. Thanks for your magic search. It's been shipped.
