You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi
I’m in the market for a new set of wheels. I don’t race but enjoy hilly 50-80 mile loops.
I’d like tubeless and they need to be rim brakes.
Very much a plus if I could use cycle to work. Probably looking to spend up to £750 mark.
Thanks in advance
Same as me, I think for that money you could get 'budget' carbon or high end alloy.
Personally I like the reassurance of getting high end/serviceable kit so would probably be looking at an aluminium build, maybe DT350 hubs/Sapim X-Ray spokes and a relatively shallow rim like a HED Belgium+ or Easton SL90 (apparently they're the same basic rim).
I'd even be controversial and suggest alloy nipples for a bit of bling and token weight saving, but appreciate a lot of people still have bad memories of early/cheap alloy nipples failing 😎
An alternative off-the-shelf build might be a Fulcrum Racing 0 but the hubs require a little more upkeep than a cartridge equivalent.
I couldn't speak for Carbon, I had specced a lightbicycle carbon equivalent to the build above but it came in over £1000...

CRC still have their Prime wheels on sale

I had a pair for years on an older road bike as they were one of the few decent rim-braked carbon wheels I could find and I ran them both tubed and tubeless with no issues.
Personally id stay away from the Prime wheels, nothing wrong with them but with the current situation i would be concerned about hub spares esp freehubs
For your budget id be looking at a set of Vision (owned by FSA) SC40's which weigh 1560 grams and you can buy them direct from the UK distro for £700
Ive had a few Vision wheels and they have always been spot on, spares easily availible, im currently running the wheels in the link and they have been faultless

They look great, wonder if they ever imported the SC30s which might be fun even if the stated weight is optimistic...
Yes they did have the SC30's although they are out of stock now
Looks like they are running down the stock of wheels they currently have hence the cheap price, more than likely they have the newer versions due in soon
I've got some Prime black edition, qr, rim brake, 50mm depth, tubeless.
They are somewhere near 1500g and were lighter and faster than the Fulcrums that came on my bike.
I've been running them tubeless and very happy with them. They ride as well if not better than the Zipp 303s on my new bike.
Got a new bike recently so I'm selling them. Drop me a line if of any interest.
Thanks all. A friend had suggested going with these guys and getting them to build something specific rather than off the shelf?
What do we think?

Handbuilts, 31mm Kinlin rims with CX-Ray then whatever your budget leaves for hubs of your choice.
Swap the rims for £55 each end when the brake track wears down.
Could even do them yourself, bit of reading involved but honestly not that difficult.
Seriously, don't buy alloy rims £750 is solid carbon money. Have a look at Wheelsmith or DCR for hand builds. I've been building Light Bicycle rims for personal use and friends for 10 years+ and their stuff is absolutely faultless; they also now do full builds with spokes/hubs of your choice if needed.
Definitely have a word with STRADA wheels ☝️, he’ll build them to your riding style, weight, budget etc.
Are these year round wheels? Not sure I’d be going carbon for winter rim brakes, but otherwise would agree Lightbicycle are worth looking into.
Vel on sigmasport look to be identical to the prime wheels. They could be worth a look at (for wheels or spares).
Hunt currently have a sale on and often get recommended. Not sure if your budget would stretch to Justridingalong?
