Why do road bikes still have the old style loop of cable into the back of the mech? Seems old fashioned nowadays.

I think it's because the alternative linkage is ever so slightly stiff to use, so the old version feels better and is kept. Ripping the cable loop off isn't much of a concern on road bikes.
