[Closed] Road bike - front mech cable hole in wrong place?

This is my new Cube Attain GTC (carbon). The front mech cable is internal, then it goes around a guide under the bottom bracket then back inside the BB cluster and out of a hole behind the seat tube to join the front mech. But the hole appears is drilled slightly in the wrong place, because it bends the cable. Out of the box there was a little bit of piping there but there was so much friction it messed up the shifting. So I put in a sturdier bit of piping and it's ok but still not great.

Is this typical? Is there a solution? Should widen the hole? (already had to widen it very slightly to get the new piping in) Anyone else experienced this?

@n0b0dy0ftheg0at is yours like this?

It's pretty common on a lot of bikes, so many different mechs with cable clamps/guides in different places, it's bound to happen. Manufacturers don't seem to give a stuff, we regularly see this on complete bikes, and have to do whatever we think is reasonable to make it work.

My previous road bike, Cervelo S2, had the cable in such a place that in the small the small ring the mech pushed the cable. Made setting it up a pain.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

They won't be drilled in by hand, there'll be a jig, and it's just not thought through well enough on some bikes.

Always hated internal routing.

To be fair my Shand has internal routing and it's a pleasure to use. If it's done well it's great but some companies don't seem to be today bothered.

Interesting, thanks folks

have to do whatever we think is reasonable to make it work.

Appreciate that you don't want liability but I'll take this to mean that I'm ok to widen the hole a little bit more!

Maybe I'll make a little grommet or something to cover it. Guessing letting rain dribble in isn't an issue?

Or maybe I can add something to the mech to adjust the cable line.

I found a thread where someone has cocked up the routing on a Cervelo, and it shows some pictures and their cable hole is like 5mm in diameter. Mine was only just big enough for the inner.

Sorry @molgrips , just seen this thread by chance..

Quickly looked at my Cube, although it's not easy to see much as it's on the turbo and the Crud Road V3 guard partially covers that bit of the seat tube.

Hole is ~1.5cm from drive side edge of seat tube on mine, original piping bit still in place, cable then angles out slightly to go through front mech clamp.

I replaced the rear mech cable in the summer while fitting new cassette and rear mech, but left the front mech cable alone. Shifting to the big ring isn't great, often needs a second mini swipe of 505 brifter.

Yeah I couldn't set up the front shifting properly at all, esoe5not following the instructions, because of the friction in the cable. It worked exactly like having dirty cables.

No idea but there are two options at the mech end (for shimano) as I remember, when attaching the cable. Might be worth checking.

Not on current mechs

Depends on the mech, but if it has a built in stop like my current Ultegra, is a full length outer a feasible option?

Don't think so, the cable guide under the BB is only for the inner.
