hi all, very new to road biking and enjoying it so far,but i want to swap the wheels as the noise from the pro 3 hub is not for me,
the bike is equipped with campag centaur shifters and f+r mechs,
i've looked at the cassette and it has no name/number or any other markings on it so i don't know if it's a shimano or campagnola cassette,am i right in assuming that the cassette must also be campag?and the hope/mavic wheels are a campag freehub?

if i order a new set of wheels do i have to order them with a campag fitting to go with the mechs/shifters?

the wheels im after are only available with a shimano fitting at present, being new to compatibility issues(unlike good ol m.t.b's),as left me a bit wary as to what works with what on road bikes,

thanks in advance for any help/advice you may be able to offer,
gray.

p.s the bike was second hand

Campag cassettes have slightly different spacing to shimano. The splines are different aswell, so you'll need a campag specific free hub body on your wheel set.

You can get expensive third party cassettes that fit Campagnolo spacing on Shimano hubs but the easiest thing to do is stick with Campagnolo free hub / cassette. On most mavic wheels you can switch free hub from Campagnolo to shimano

You're talking about a road bike here, so there's a much simpler solution. Keep pedalling. That way the noise from the freehub won't bother you.

As aracer say, just keep pedalling, your on a road bike, not an MTB, and you shouldn't be freewheeling.

As for what cassette to have, mixing Shimano & Campagnolo can be done, but it is always a messy solution, and just sticking with one system is the best solution.

With wheels from Fulcrum, American Classics and a few others you can swap the freehubs from Shimano to Campagnolo, and you can buy some cassettes with Shimano splines & Campagnolo spacing (Ambrosio), but which ever way you do it, it will almost always cost more than just getting the regular Campagnolo parts in the first place

The shifting is rubbish on these. There's plenty of good wheels available with Campag freehubs.

If you have Campag shifter the cassette will be hence the need to get compatible hubs. You can get decent cassettes than fit Shimano splined hubs. The American classic one I had was perfect. I have fitted a Ambrosio one which is much cheaper and to be honest I can't fault it. With older Veloce shifters its shifts sweeter than my mates brand new Centuar set up. maybe there is a set up issue there but its fine by me.

If your able to remove the cassette and post a pic it might be easier to tell what type the freehub/cassette is. It's a surprise there are no markings. for a campag cassette the longest notch has step in it about half way . Shimano's long notch is the same size.

As Matt says it's most likely campag if yor using campag shifters. It is possible to run 10 speed Campag with a shimano cassette though.

If your buying mavic wheels the freehub can be swapped as they do both. Same's probably true for fulcrum wheels.

So either stop, or learn to soft pedal - a useful thing to be able to do. There really is very little need to freewheel on a road bike. Excessive noise from a freewheel is a really silly reason to change your wheels or mess around with them on a road bike.

Ambrosio do one for £30. They don't shift quite as well but they're perfectly functional and useable
