Lane below Pike

An inch or so of snow on Rivington today. Not really a big fan of the Pike but it was very pleasant today-very few walkers and the new Specialized Storm Controls performed faultlessly in compacted and fresh snow as well as the few ice patches dotted about.

Looked like a cyclocross bike had been out on the bridleway up to the Nab.

Get off my land!.

Tend to avoid the place ove the weekend. Full of cocks with generic fighting dogs swigging wife beater.

Lowey, was out with KKF , was getting shouted at by dog walkers who were probably up there for the first time this year and thinking they owned the place.

Saw 3 seperate groups coming up the 'eliminator'

I was up there on Sunday and it was fine - descents were all walker free and everyone seemed happy and friendly. There was two scallies in a probably nicked escort trying to drive up what I think is called the ice cream run though. It didn't go well.

Eliminator - ice cream run I think.

We call it elimiator from when Bolton Mountain Bikes ran a duel eliminator from the Pike down to the car park.....with Peat,Longden et al in attendance.

me & Rivvy do have a past ? it's very fast & fun but it's one of the places i do tend to get my downhill confidence back ! eek, that usually ends up in a big stack & broken bones ! it could be that i'm just getting old so therefore better to stick to the other local routes eh, like the mary townley loop or gisburn forest lol !

you need to ride it rigid SS for the full badge. You need to jump the tarmac drop - better to the right IMHO- not roll it . One of the few places I have yet to crash - wrecked two wheels there though but yet to stack badly. Not nice when icey. I have walked it as well there are no lines just hold on.

That's just for the beginner badge.
You *know* what the next, and fully qualified step is to that one. 😉

I think it's better to jump to the left. The kennels descent from the two lads is my fave.

we saw an old bloke go down the icr on a unicycle

btw the belmont descent wants leaving alone until spring, and then it will want some serious work

I doubt it will get it. I'd just get used to its new, slightly more technical state

(assuming by extrapolation from the last two times I've been down it how much more it has eroded by now)

I played chicken with a dog walker on sunday that was shouting at me 'this is a footpath get off and walk!' He stood across the path arms folded refusing to move....he moved when I got within about 3 feet of him and didn't stop 😈

Footpath or bridleway, you must give way to walkers. Plus, if you are talking about the 'Belmont descent', that is indeed a footpath so it's best not to create friction with ramblers when riding it.

Good to see people are still helping to improve relations between walkers and cyclists there then...

I find it better to explain the error of their ways than to appear moronic, aggressive and intimidating. But whatever floats your boat I guess...

Aww danny got a telling off.

It is always possible it was unintentional and he just couldn't stop but is now bluffing it out 🙂

I’m not sure if it was a footway or bridleway, it was one of those paths near Leverhulme Castle, you know the big wide ones. I always do give way and had moved over to the side of the path. The walker then moved in my line, took his folded arm stance and began shouting taking me by surprise - if you're prepared to do that then you've got to be prepared for me not to stop.

If this doesn't comply with MTB/walker etiquette then I don’t care.

It is true that there are some very headstrong walkers around that area who think they are right no matter what. Personally, I'd have run away crying, which may have made them realise what a nasty bully they really are.

memory map shows only dashed lines down round the castle so I'd say you've won that one 🙂

Run that millitant bastard over Danny.

The eliminator that Margin talks about in 96, there was even a guy who insisted on walking up from the bottom car park right in the middle of the track as guys were blasting down. He insisted it was his right. The guy on the loud speaker was trying to warn the riders coming down but this cock just carried on walking up it. Even the spectators lining both sides of the track were shouting at him. Wouldnt mind but the organisers had got a closure notice and everything to run the race.

Just sums up what some of the idiots are like around Rivi, think they bloody own the place when really its all mine.

Sutty, quite happy with the one I;ve got cheers mate.

Just ride it all at night. Everything defaults to bridleway at night anyway.

The funniest thing I've seen was riding down the ice cream run, was when we were daft enough to ride it at night in sub-zero temperatures. Not big or clever. The tarmac bit in the middle was just a sheet of ice.

We discovered this as Chod pumped his forks ready for launch. His front wheel wemt straight out from under him and he went off the drop backwards, arse-first with his bike on top of him.

His face was a picture. The two of us behind him both fell off we were laughing that hard 🙂

I still prefer the casually cheeky response.

Person near White Coppice: "There's no bikes here"
Me: [looks down at bike in a puzzled manner] "Are you sure?"
Person: "Yes, there's no bikes here!"
Me: "OK then, I'll just carry on riding my llama then. Have a nice afternoon"

TBH I usually find it is non local red sock brigade who have the most issues with cyclists.
1. Woman called me the c word for riding. Istopped challenged her then produced OS map to prove I could ride legally here to which she replied well you are still a c word- decided after this never to bother engaging on this issue as it is like trying to defuse road rage by discussing the issue
2. Going up a road section- the of road bit up to gardens from the school- and they would not give way to let three of us through. AFter a few mins we eventually got past at the edge. one of us then just turned round and charged them all whilst screaming at them - very funny but they then all reached the two of us left and started moaning about respect etc

San Marino is Ace.. its in great condition for bikers... getting pretty technical, almost getting back to its old self before it was resurfaced years ago.

Looks like it's had a small amount from here (Coppull). You don't have to go to the top bit's if it's a bit thick up there, plenty to ride lower down.

Andituk,

Quite nice and crispy up there last night:
Barn>Pike>Wilders Moor>Mast>Smithills Moor>Two Lads>Dog kennels>Gardens
Met a couple of other loonies up by the mast too.
Bolton MRT were up there too pratting around with out-of-life distress flares.
Not really any problem with the amount of snow that's on the ground, still plenty grippy enough and nice and fast rolling 'cos it's frozen solid underneath.

Have fun.

Last night round Healy Nabb was superb, better than Tuesday night. An extra layer of snow made it even grippier for some reason. Got a month of work now so will be friking nailing Rivvy and the area alot as i only live 500 metres away. Look out for the Santa Cruz Blur, all black and stealthy with a full lycra clad rider, no armour of 85 litre ruck sac.

Say hello. 😀

Nods to Lowey. Pleased to meet you.

We reversed your tracks down Smithills Moor to the steps, then turned left and went exploring off-piste before crossing what were presumably your tracks on the road near Smithills Dean.

Nods back at Ecky.

There's a good run down to Coal Pit Road after you hit the lake on that left turn. Good in the dry anyway.
