I'm hoping to follow the river Wye from source to sea in aid of charity and I wondered if there was anybody out there with experience of biking next to it. I don't know how much of it is mtb "permissable". Any advice most welcome. I'm a newbie to Singletrack so I'd like to take this opportunity to also say a big "HELLO!".

Dunno about off road but I has a good book about the bridges of the wye.
that would make the basis of a good road ride

I do hope the Deliverance clip is no reference to the people of the Forest of Dean. I have friends in those trees!!

didn't think the Wye went through the forest of Dean, so I don't what you're suggesting there Peter 😉

a bit more on topic, theres plenty of you tube clips of canoeing the wye And I remember a bbc program about canoeing the wye though i can't find it now.

Isn't Symonds Yat in the Forest of Dean?

I kayaked parts of the upper Wye. Some of it is quite hard going in Gorge sections. Couldn't imagine being able to cycle that close to it.
Try asking on UK rivers guidebook.

I've canoed it - its a great trip. Like Kayak23, don't think there are bike trails all along right by the river, but still worth investigating. Go for it

Well the river Wye does run through FOD, but goes into the river Severn and the Severn goes into the sea.

Near Tintern the Wye Valley Walk and Offa's Dyke are a bit cheeky, but very nice.... I'll say no more, other than to avoid those sections during prime rambling hours.

the Wye does go through the FOD (thanks for the offensive comments, I'm a local born and bred)

very difficult to follow even in the lower parts, lots of footpaths on farm land, there have been attempts to open disused railway lines from Monmouth down, to not avail,

you can get away with it and do Ross to Chepstow, further up I have no idea, I have been made to get off my bike and walk around Symonds Yat, a farmer was showing off to his son, skidded his truck in front me and said I couldn't ride there, even though I was on Forestry Commission land, the FC did nothing when I reported it,

Thanks guys and girls. Think it's going to be a bit of map work and wing it by the sounds of things. Probably end up on the road a little more than we'd like. I've got family in Redbrook so I can spend a bit of time exploring ahead of the trip. I'll let you know how we get on.

It's possible to follow the Wye from source to Severn with a lot of off-road if you're prepared to climb in and out of the valley and deviate from the actual river along the way. Unfortunately, there are also parts where you will be linking the off-road bits with longish sections of tarmac eg between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye.

The section by the FoD (Ross-on-Wye to Chepstow) can be ridden with a fair old bit of (legal) off-road.

EDIT: Oh, hello BTW and welcome to Singletrack! Redbrook is a great stop-off point, the Boat being a most welcome watering hole 😉 Widge (posted above) and myself are both local to there.

In the lower Wye Valley there is a cycle path that uses the old railway line from Symonds Yat to Monmouth. You could cross over to Monmouth and with a bit of FP catch the dead end BW by Penallt.

From Redbrook follow the old railway on the Welsh side to Bigsweir You're right next to the river on the BW from Bigsweir to Brockweir.

Cross over the bridge, past the old station and ride next to the river on the FP to Tintern. (If anybody moans, point out that it's a towpath - see the sign on the gate by the exit from the Church yard).

...or stay on the same side through Wyesham along the old railway to Redbrook. Or take the old RH branch from Wyesahm to Monmouth Station over the 'bumpy' bridge and come out at the bottom of Monmouth to pick up Marko's bit of FP. So many choices... 8)
