if i install a rimpact or similar in the rear - what sort of pressures can i expect to drop to? is there a set figure they recommend going down by?
ive recently been running my rear tyre at around 25-26 psi - down from the usual 29/30 id ordinarily run in the rocky places i ride
but it does feel so much better without losing much rolling resistance, it also gives a weird sensation of the rear end of the bike's suspension feeling more plush
so if i run a rimpact is it viable to drop pressures down to 25 mark without sacrificing punctures etc?
I put a rimpact strip in the front and rear on my full-sus after I wrote off a rear rim. Granted I'm quite light, but run 18psi in the front and 22 in the rear and haven't had any problems.
I'm following this - it'd be useful to know respondents weight and type of riding/terrain. Having some er... let's say 'mixed experiences'...
I've got a Huck Norris in the rear as I'm hopeless at not smashing it into stumps/roots etc. With a 2.8in Rekon+ I've had it down to circa 15PSI (maybe even less) with no major issues, but have come back up to 19-20PSI after feeling the rim hit terra firma on some poorly picked lines.
Worth noting I'm 62kgs in my riding gear and that's on a hardtail running Enve M70 rims.
for reference i am light at 175lbs and a 'light' rider , i tend not too puncture much anyways (touch wood!)
Get the Rimpact Pro for sure, not the normal one.

whats the difference chakaping? is it alot heavier?
With the low pressures and the inserts, do you have the same rolling resistance as no inserts and a higher pressure, or is it noticeable more draggy?

Not a lot heavier, but gives much better protection.
Had two front pinch flats this month with normal Rimpact.
Weight, riding style, rim width and tyre width are all important to know here.

24psi rear, 21psi front. Fronts don't have an insert, I've always been light on the front. The rear is a different story. Between 2014 and 2018 I broke three carbon rims and countless pinch punctures at 26-28psi. The rear has a rimpact now, grips better with less psi and I only occasionally (tolerably) get a pinch flat.
This is all just 'bro' science isn't it?
So many variables, tyre size for one is going to make a big difference in pressure that a specific rider requires, weight of rider, type of tyre (side wall construction), terrain, rim width etc. etc.
For the record I run front 15/16 psi and rear 18/19psi but even if I gave you my weight you have no idea what tyres I'm using, rims, bike, weight or any of the above so what are you going to do with the information?
But yeah, I dropped about 3 psi in the rear with Rimpacts and the same in the front without, but I also increased the rim width!
I found that previous to using inserts i'd worked out a pressure which was as low as i could go, without constantly pinch-flatting/rim-dinging. So, with inserts i went down a few PSI until i could feel the very occasional impact on my (rimpact!!) and settled around there.

I'm using rimpact front and rear on 2 bikes, 85kg with my gear on and I'm normally at 17psi front and 22psi rear, that's even for rocky stuff like fast Lakes bridleway boulder bashing. That's on 2.4 or 2.6 tyres.

is there a extra sense of damping over rougher/root trails etc? im running maxxis tyres too sounds like most of you are doing exactly what i do
i wouldnt put one in the front, i dont ever puncture up front even at 20psi so i dont think ill need one up front, unless it makes the front feel even grippier at that pressure?
would be keen to hear on any noticeable drag at all as asked above?

i dont recall ever having a front tyre flat, but i put one up front for the smoothness,
i really noticed on those horrible type rock gardens on the flat where i used to hear the pings. it definately helps the bike roll better over the techier tracks, or my skill has got better :0)

cool - sounds promising, guessing will notice it moreso in winter slippy/slop too, guess any extra grip would be welcome for whats about to arrive!
now onto the most important question, how easy are they to fit?
is there a definitive video/read through that is guarenteed to work with maxxis tyres?

If you buy them through Hunt you can already get singles that way. Although…… they reckon you see the biggest handling/vibration improvements on the front

Depends. The hard of thinking or those that rush into it can have trouble, plus certain combos of rims and tires are naturally tighter than others.
Take a look at youtube insert videos for pointers.
Get one side of the tyre on the rim, then put the insert in, and make sure you push the remaining bead past the insert well into the rim bed to give you slack to get the rest of the bead mounted.

Yes, it's nice, you notice it for a bit then stop noticing it.
They're OK to fit unless you get a bastard rim/tyre combo IME.
cool well ive just ordered some, sounds like they work ok installation wise with maxxis EXO - just moreso about getting the psi down for winter without hopefully cracking my carbon rims
if i get an extra sense of dampening and feel then a great bonus - hopefully wont notice the weight too much extra too, ive just gone standard as 90g is plenty extra as it is 🙂
This reminds me I have a set waiting to fit and try out for winter.
Normally run 23F/25-26Rpsi. I've not experimented with lower as this has been fine on all fronts all summer. Bit low if I'm taking the backpack instead of hip pack, so I then run 24/27 otherwise the rear bulges a bit and I get the odd few dribbles of sealant escaping.
I weigh 75kg kitted up with gear and water. Maybe another 2kg for backpack rides. Trail centre red/black, rocky bridleways type riding, Maxxis EXO WT on 140mm trail bike.
I was thinking ballpark 20F/23R as a starting point. Now seeing others above who are heavier but on lower pressures makes me think I could try lower.

I've used inserts and do really rate them (rimpacts) especially in wet when you can use really low pressures, the grip is bonkers.
I mainly use DH tyres in the summer though as most of my riding is uplift. You still get slashed tyres with rimpact and say exo+. Low pressures also feel squirmy and I've rolled tyres off the rim/ burped them on machine built flow trails/berms.
I would defo use them for harder trail riding, especially the wetter half of the year, but only really for the grip and feel, not so much puncture protection. I'd also say that change of feel is not for everyone.
I'm using a rear only under a Dissector 2.4". 95kgs + gear on a steel hardtail, definitely preferred the ability to ride rougher on it than before I used one. Mainly riding loose over hard and some fast rocky stuff. No idea what pressures I run, ~20-25psi depending on what I feel like. I've had heaps of punctures this year, but if i raise the pressure it'll be like ice skating on my tracks.
I'd be interested to know why someone like Jack Moir doesn't use inserts. You'd think the pounding he gives his bikes would require it.
I found rimpacts didn't give any more support to allow me to run lower pressures on an exo type of casing.
I'd just rather take the weight hit on a heavier tyre and not bother with an insert, more reliable, simpler and feels better.

Standard trails 22 PSI front 25 PSI rear. Add a few PSI front and rear if particularly rocky.
Any less pressure than that and the drag/squirm at low speed is fairly noticeable.
These tyres have thick sidewalls somewhere between a Maxxis DD and a Maxxis DH casing.
Whilst other lighter tyres are available, i find the WTB high grip compund harder wearing than Maxxis equivalent and I've yet to have a puncture.
I reckon I can use a similar weight setup (I.e. lighter tyre + (Cushcore) insert for overall similar weight) and run perhaps 3-4psi less. Using a lighter carcass also contributes to the tyre's ability to deform/grip, both of which which feel nicer IMO.
Pressures are so specific to riding style / weight / conditions, so I don't think it's particularly useful to give a spec rundown.
The downside is definitely the faff. I never really believed people when they complained that Cushcores were difficult to fit, but they totally are - and even harder to remove. I haven't had to fix one on the trail but it'd be a nightmare. The one pinch I had (Exo+ tyres, hole too big to plug), I was able to ride a few miles home on the insert which was only mildly annoying.

It went in fine and i got the last bit of the tyre on relatively easy too
All in all no more faff than actually putting a tyre on

Will have a good test with pressures weirdly I punctured for the first time in ages last night so needed take the tyre off repair it anyways
Sidewalls even by hand feel more supportive straight away, interested to try them now! Will report back
