29er wheels - with 29mm internal width
Just looking at a 3 inch Chronicle tyre and packaging says minimum internal rim width 40mm
Anyone tried this and survived?
I haven't but I wouldn't. A 3 inch tyre is going to end up a bit of a funny shape on e 29mm rim.
EDIT : and are you sure they'll clear the frame/forks?
Back in the day the "rule" seemed to be 1mm for each 0.1" so a 3" tyre would go on a 30mm rim just fine. But we've got new rules now 🙂
Presumably the manufacturer has actually tested this hence the statement on the packaging. There'll be a bit of a safety margin involved and the tyre may actually be OK on 35mm ID rims.
I'm running 2.8 and 3" Nobby Nics on 25mm rims, I'm no riding God but it's worked (and to me, looks) OK, albeit on the narrow side.
It will work and be ok on a technical level, but it will make the tyre an odd shape, also you will need to run the tyre at a higher pressure to avoid it folding over when cornring. This will remove at a stroke the main reason to use a 3” tyre, as the whole point is the ability to run it at lower pressure.
Yeah it should fit it's on some Stooge forks
Can't be bothered with new rim so will look for something narrower
I’d agree that 35mm may be as ‘narrow’ as you want to go. If building, 35 rear and 40 front may be a good compromise.
The tyre *will* go on a 29/30mm rim and will not catch fire/kill you but if the mfr is calling for a much wider rim you can expect a nice square footprint to be over-round and may find the edge knobs further round than expected. Depending on design this may or may not ride well.
