Hi
My predicament is this
I’ve picked up a gravel bike frame (Space Chicken)
I already have MTB wheels DT Swiss xm1501 30mm internal width I would really like to use these wheels but worried they’ll be to wide internally for gravel bike tyres , I’m typically looking at getting 43mm tyres .
My first take on this is YES the rims will be to wide but having done a little research Ive come across this equation that gives the tyres min and max rim width
Take the first ETRTO number of the tyre let’s say 43mm multiply it by 0.4 to give the tyres narrowest rim capability (17mm)
And for its widest rim capacity multiply it by 0.8 (34mm)
Applying this logic then a 43mm tyre on 30mm rim will work just fine and you could even go as low as a 40mm tyre
So to my Question, Has anybody used a 43mm or slightly smaller tyre on a 30mm internal width rim ?
Thanks in advance
You have to just try it.
eg I have Continental GP 4000 IIs 28mm which come up at 32mm on my Zipp 404s, I then changed to GP5000 28mm which came up at 26mm on the same rims...
There's not much consistency in tyre widths as far as I can see..
I would use something like the chart on this page https://www.wtb.com/pages/tire-rim-fit-chart as a starting point. Most tyre manufacturers have something similar on their pages, so if you know what tyres you want to run, I would start there.
And from the chart a 43mm tyre on a 30mm internal rim would work, but is not optimal...
