Quite fancy trying a 3 inch tire on my rigid xc bike. Currently use a 2.6 ikon on a WTB KOM light i29. Like it but just want to try something with a bit more give without adding too much wieght. I have a spare wheel; Novatech hub and WTB ST29. Happy to put a new rim on but no idea where to start for fat stuff. It doesn't need to be strong for my wieght. But needs to be light and not expensive.

Any recommendations for a rim and tire?

Rim is more if a case of what you can get but the obvious choices would be surly rabbit hole, stans hugo, wtb i40 and Halo do a good one but I forget the name.

Tyres, try vittoria bomboloni, maxxis chronicle or wtb ranger but again it's as much about what you can actually get as what you want.

I have been running 45mm internal Sun Mulefut 50s and have now swapped to WTB i40s and both work nicely.

The front wheel with the Mulefut is for sale if you run a bolt through fork.

Been running 29+ tyres on a 35mm Velocity rims for 7 years without problems - check chain/ tyre clearances and 1x transmission to stop the chain rubbing the tyre in lowest gear if looking at f+r. Maxxis Chronicles no longer available.

+1 for Velocity Dually rims, been faultless on my 29+ build. Swap between Teravail Coronado 2.8’s in the summer to Minion DHF/DHR 3.0’s in winter.

Feeling smug with my 4 sets of chronicles ..they are a great tyre and last for ages but no real grip in the slop ..bought some monster 3.25 Duro Crux's for that duty ...quite heavy but also a great huge volume tyre with far more grip. Also somehow acquired knards . bombolinis and other which should see me out of this world .
If you wanted Rabbit holes on hope hubs (iirc) , 100 or 135 QR (or both )I might consider selling ..could perhaps do tyres as well if needed but would need to check my collection .

As Kaiser says above, Chronicles last for bloody ever!
I've had one on my Krampus for 5 years, and it's still going.
Originally on the front, but now on the rear with a 3.0 DHF up front. Which seems equally indestructible.
Something about bigger width + bigger circumference + lower pressure, seems to = realy long life.
