Looking to build up some wheels for my new frame and forks (100mm rear, 120mm front) after something lightweight but thats not going to need truing up after every ride, needs to be suitable for all day rides and 1 hour blasts round the local woods. Also i'll be looking to go tubeless at some point.
Mainly ride in the peaks so lots of fast rocky runs etc and the odd little jump and drop here and there, i'd just call it riding, not sure sure what category it'd fit into these days 😆 , I'm quite a light on kit sort of rider and never normally break stuff...

Would the stans crest or mavic xc717's hold up to that type of riding? Or should I go for the arch rim for a bit of extra strength (more weight obviously tho)...? Any other suggestions?

😀

What do you weigh?

What size tyres do you use?

How soon do you want to go tubeless (sooner the better IMO)?

717's here, under 16st of phalic sexuality & no complaints whatsoever. Have run ghetto tubeless on them, again no issues. Would happily buy again.

Sounds like the XC717 or Crest would suit pretty well, with the Crest being the lighter of the two. Arch would give you much more strength in the rim for the weight of the 717.

I'm just about to swap from 717s to Crests - I've ridden the Mavics for 3 years (12st, XC/ trail centres, not too much air type riding) with nary a dent.

Crests (or Alpines), No doubt about it. Particularly if you want to run tubeless.

I'm 13 and a bit stone and rode a set of Hope Pro IIs/Crest around the Dyfi Enduro course yesterday, nice wheels, light and strong.

I'm 12 stone and have run 717s and the "old crest rim" the 355.

They have been true for over a year with no maintenance (hope hoops). I've done all sorts from lakeland rocky rides to trailcentres to canal tow paths. I do the odd drop but nothing massive. I'm runnign them on a Stumpy FSR which is 140mm/120mm

I'd suggest the 717 or crest would be more than fine. The crest would be lighter and marginally easier to go tubeless on using the notubes kit (although this works with the 717 as well). So the crest would be top. It's more expensive if you are getting a custom build but if you get hope hoops the price is the same for either.

Both rims have a maximum width of 2.1 but I've been running 2.3 on both without trouble. Besides, one manufacturers 2.1 is anothers 1.8 is anothers 2.3

Thanks for the advice so far, looks like the crest could be up to the job then, would this definitely be the better option if I'm going tubeless?

POSTED 1 HOUR AGO # REPORT-POST

Just over 12 stone, currently using bonty mud x's (2.1?) in the winter, maxxis ardent for the summer in 2.25 but going to go for something narrower. Looking to go tubeless pretty soon, well at least by June anyway as we've got a week in the sierra Nevada booked...

Got a set of hoops with Flows, a set of 29er 355s rims and just bought a set of hoops with crests. Flows are the oldest and have been chosen for all the worst terrain I ride and are still mint. The rear 355 has a ding in the side wall which means I don't trust it tubeless any more and I put a mild ding in the front crest on its first trip out yesterday. Both damaged rims were being ridden on the not exactly gnarr south downs at the time.

Only one person's experience but I'm beginning to loose a little confidence in the lighter Stans rim's ability to withstand impacts from loose stones and the like although there is no doubt they are very stiff for their weight.

the walls on crests are thin, i've trashed a crest too. but its impossible to deny they are very decent light weight wheels.
I also still have 717 on hope xc, one of which has a big ding but has and still is very reliable over the years.

if you want to go tubeless get crests/arch/flows etc
if you want cheap and tubes get 717 (maybe 2nd hand)

I can echo convert's feelings about crests. 14st rider, using them on my SS and I've had to true them Evey month since I got them. I've just put some fatter but still fast rolling rubber on them in the hope it'll give them a little extra margin. Given my experience so far, I should have possibly gone for arches.

I have Arches on XT hubs and weigh 13+half stone and have never had to true them in 4 years riding. They have been on an HT and are now on my FS- great wheels, not light but very strong.

Go Stan's for definite. Mavic 717's were top of the pile once, about 8 years ago. Not any more.

If you were a heavier bloke (say over 13 stone) and a hard rider, I'd suggest going for Arches, or possibly Flows (if you wanted the wider profile). But as you're about the same weight as me, but you say you're light on kit, go with the Crests. I've got some 355's and I'm not especially light or easy on my kit, I was worried when I got them whether or not they would stand up to my use. I've not even had to true them yet!

Also, 717's give too narrow a profile to a wide tyre. Stans are only about 3mm wider, but it makes all the difference, trust me.

Just spent the last 4 days thrashing a set of crests round afan and cwmcarn on my very stiff hardtail (mmmbop). I probably weigh in 13.5stone in kit. Smallish tyres too... 2.25 NN front, 2.1 cont speedking rear.

Rims have survived well, but the rear definitely isn't round anymore, but nothing 30 mins in the jig shouldn't sort.

They aren't really up for the riding I was putting them through to be honest and I will be buying a flow rim for the rear shortly, and using the crest on my XC bike.

Given your criteria I'd go arch.

Well thanks for the advice, gone for the crest rims in the end.
Ordered them this afternoon from just riding along (who were very very helpful) 😀

Hope they're strong enough now!
