Nice.

Anyone got a set of steel forks going spare for a 26incher?

Lovely, Josh.

Got some Kona P2s, 1 inch threaded steerer.

Guess they're unsuitable, or you'd have mentioned those bits!

So "Stealth" ad, I guess. Better chance on this thread than most others of someone having a bike for them!

i rode round cannock a few weeks ago fully rigid - it killed me. Felt like i had had he shit kicked out of me for abut a week after 🙁 why would you do it in this day and age?

Are there any off the shelf budget rigid 29er options?

Normal 29er wheels, not 650b or 29+.

Alu or steel, 1x gearing. The kona unit/unit-x is a bit too much but that kind of idea. Not bothered about racks /packs/tents and all that nonsense, simple the better.

Or any cheapo frame/fork options?

I miss my Genesis Fortitude Race 🙁

Pinnacle Ramin?

Edit: apparently not, sorry. The cheapest one used to be rigid. Not any more.

Ah, strike that, maybe Longitude has too many eyelets/fixing points for the discerning! Can always file and fill...?

Probably the cheapest way is to buy a 29er hardtail and sell the suspension forks and try and pick up a set of cheaper carbon forks.

Have a look for genesis tarn bikes. They mainly have 650b plus wheels and tyres on but you can swop them for 29er wheels and tyres.

They come with a decent rigid carbon fork, 1x and can be picked up for a bargain on ebay.

The Genesis Longitude is the nearest thing to the old Fortitude, but it still falls foul of what seemingly everyone else has done too - more, more, more features!
Sliding dropouts, a bazillion bosses and mounts, etc.

The old Fortitude race was brilliant, sold it earlier this year. Shouldn't have!

Brother cycles is the one I've recommended in the past. Saw some out in the Purbecks and I think they look even nicer in real life, if nothing else. The riders were the owners and they seemed very friendly.

Onza are selling Payoff 29er frames at £199 17" in blue.

The full bikes are 17" and 29" with a very good spec for £699. Come with a 120 Revelation. A rigid carbon fork would be 100 equivalent and cheap addition. The PF30 BB also gives SS option.

On-One Bootzipper is dirt cheap for a full bike...

https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CBOOBZ29FBAP1/on-one-bootzipper-29er-sram-apex-1-mountain-bike

I single-speeded my Stooge mk4 recently and can't believe how fast it still is around somewhere like Gisburn red. I lost barely 5 mins over a full lap compared to a geared XC hardtail I had a while back.

Kona Unit X. The geared version comes in a lovely gold colour (gloss champagne). It is plus size but just change the tyres, always nice to have the option to run bigger tyres on a rigid.

Image hotlinked from bikepacking.com so give them a click for the detail... https://bikepacking.com/news/2020-kona-unit-x/

Edit: Ahh sorry, missed the 'budget' bit - this is nearly £1500. Not sure if they have rigid options lower down the range.

I don’t have this one anymore, but (as per the anecdote below) it was awesome. So much fun. Soooo much.

Just built up a rigid Pinnacle Ramin for commuting and maybe a bit of bikepacking.
£100 frame and fork from Evans plus £30 back in vouchers due to a big paint chip on one of the chainstays. New Superstar wheels, Spesh Fasttrak 29x2.3 tyres and Deore double cranks, everything else from spares box.
My first rigid mountain bike since 1996 when I had a GT Timberline.

Oh aye,sorry.

Just learning to carry speed a bit more at the moment, and trying not to tire myself out on the flatter bits so as to have something in reserve for the hills. The whole bike feels incredibly light and sharp though.

Need to stay very loose, adjust riding style a lot too. Unweight the front and pray a bit (even if you’re not religious). I can only afford the one bike. Needed to sell my last one (full sus) to free up some cash. Only option with the change was a rigid. Good compromise if you can only have one.

Shiny new Stooge MK4 with the 57mm offset forks for 27.5 geo.
Just taken it round the town for a quick blast and impressions are good so far. It replaces the MK2 stooge which I sadly killed a few weeks ago. The front end feels quite different at this stage and doesn't pop up as easily as the MK2 (longer fork rake I guess) but im sure i'll have this in hand in a week or so, other wise it feels really nice and should be a lot of fun.

Built it up with just the bits from the last one, albeit new axle ends to convert to 12 and 15mm through hubs and a seat post shim to take a 27.2 seat post.

Its going to live in the house for a few days as is the way with all new bikes....much to the wife's chagrin.

First time posting pics since gawd knows when so here goes:

A roadie until about 5 months ago I decided to ressurrect my old Scott Sawtooth mouldering in a corner of my garage. A bit of minor maintenance and off I went to Swinley. Loved it and have subsequently bought a Bossnut. I think the Sawtooth must be getting on for around 30 years old?

Lots of clean, shiny, blingy bikes here, so to even things up a bit:

1*1

Surly 1*1 - build for the slop, so perfect for conditions at the moment.

It has been cleaned in the past, but i think the last time was 2015. Seat post has been stuck since about 2013.

Major upgrade was the mudhugger last year.

Whilst I like the simplicity of the SS/Rigid set up, I only associate this bike with winter/cold/rain/mud, so will never be my favourite.

In fact far too wierd so the bars have been changed for some Mary's after one ride

And due to the ingenuity of some STW person (can't remember who) it has a very cool dinglespeed set up

I've only managed a shakedown ride so far, but first impressions are good. It's lovely and light but I'm coming from a steel hardtail so it's going to feel different.

Frame quality looked good to me, seemed well finished.

I don't know but I'd be quite interested to find out myself. The frame, forks, bars and wheels are all light, but the other finishing kit is mid range stuff so that's where weight gets added. I was trying to keep costs down.

It's an XL. I'm right on the middle of L/XL so I gave it a lot of thought and went bigger in the end. Seems OK so far.

I'm pretty sure it would, there is absolutely bags of space in there.

I haven't a picture to hand, but those tyres are 2.3".
