Another Tarn here, the build has evolved a little since this photo, currently sporting 120mm fox forks and 29er wheels but I do switch back and forth and definitely prefer the B+

If is then I’m sad to say it’s probably dead… I passed it on to someone once I found the 4th crack, they said they were going to attempt to fix it but I think it was too far gone.

bah...damn shame. thanks for the closure tho, always wondered if someone was still riding it.
i still hanker for an old, skinny, steel, 26er ss with discs.... dekerf, another soulcraft, that sort of thing....
it prompted me to do an ebay and pinkbike search....zilch!

thanks

I also have a spare set of wheels with 28mm continental gatorskin tyres fitted, it's a real tarmac weapon in that guise.

Since raised the bars and chubbied the front. Got my eye on the Stooge Junker bars when they come so I can ditch the gopping stem.

UGgerly forked IO. It used to be used daily for dog walks, me and dog have separated 😉 , but it has an extremely useful utility function for shopping and taking garden waste to dump, so it will never die.

I wanted to add this one, but didn't have any suitable pics, until this morning on a long way in to work.
1996 Trek 850, that because of it being my commuter/everything else bike, ends up being what I probably ride more than anything.

Lots of personal project parts- Brake boosters, bar-ends, chain tensioner, bash ring, 26.8 dropper, ghetto tubeless.

Not sure if either of these count as 'mountain' bikes, but I've ridden them both on red (and a bit of black) trails at trail centres, and beyond:

Some genuinely lovely looking bikes in this thread.

Got me thinking of the rigids I rode back in the early 90's. Not ridden a rigid since and can't but help feel I'm missing out on the simplicity I remember from that era.

Oh this thread. This b*stard of a thread. I read it, then re-read it and then went on to another tab and purchased a Bombtrack Beyond + ADV frameset. It just seemed the right thing to do. It was wasn't it?

MTB not touring geometry?

Wassat mean?

Normal MTB geometry is designed to integrate the suspension into the handling - I'd argue that rigid MTBs need to be different.

@lunge There are a few completes still about, as mentioned before Brother do a nice one, as do Ribble. Wonder and Marin have good ones under a grand, but I've been perving over the 2020 Kona Unit-X that's just been released. Still cant afford it, though.

(stealth ad: so the frame and fork pictured above will shortly be for sale [very cheaply] if this thread has anyone curious to try rigid)

Any old excuse to post yet another pic of my rigid commuter. Brand X HT01. Now has a 180 rotor front, and 32t ring (was 34t).
If a 24" street/trials bike counts:

Had it seven months, still bad at it, but enjoy it, making slow progress, but am 40something.

Radicool! How’s the climbing with that?

It has a 75.5 ST angle, and 450 reach, so is an ace climber.
Sit and spin, and the front wheel stays planted without having to hover over the nose of the saddle.

survivor - it rides great!

Although it looks a bit mad, it's mostly quite 'normal' by todays standards.
Obviously, the front end is a bit out there...
It was built primarily as a hardcore hardtail, which I wanted to run 150 forks at 63 degrees with a B+ tyre.
I also wanted the option of rigid, but rigid forks for 63 HA don't exist, so I had these built.
I paid close attention to the mechanical trail and wheel flop numbers, to get the correct offset for the head angle. I went with what I knew worked well on production bikes.
Check out the new Stooge MK4, it's getting slacker and big offset.
It feels really balanced, but more confident downhill than a rigid bike has any right to be, with the big tyre way out front like a DH bike.

I've had it a couple of years now. I'm considering selling it to get another one made, full 29+ this time with some changes to make it more bikepacking specific.
I love the new Stooge MK4, but the 72 SA rules it out for me. It was tempting me greatly otherwise.

A bit more on mechanical trail for the geo geeks HERE

And a handy calculator HERE
