You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Several months ago I got knocked off my bike on the way to work, nothing serious, got back on. A day or so later it was obvious my hand took more impact than I'd initially realized, not enough to get it looked at. Took a couple of months (or more) to reduce first to niggles and then ease off altogether. So had forgotten about it until this week, frost made some farm tracks on my commute rideable, ie, not sloshy muddy, but they're quite churned up in places for a rigid hybrid with firm tyres for road riding.
Result, pain in metacarpals for most of the week. The options were to continue riding the off-road section because fun and car free but risk more pain, or ride the boring slightly longer road section with cars but less pain. So pain it was. Temps won't be freezing next week so it'll be sloppy again.
Any advice, apart from rest it?
Ergon grips with the palm rests.

also, swept bars like mary bars definitely help, and higher bars also.

As you'd been riding on the road fine until now, perhaps it's more due to vibration and shocks rather than having weight on it?
We covered a lot in this thread, it's a long one but might have a few tips you could pick out, quicker if you skim through only my posts for a first read.

Ah yes, here's my useful advice 😂🙄
Anyone said go slower, stay loose yet?
Get off and walk!
Don’t ride rooty/rocky trails or popular trails covered in braking bumps!
