How do.

I'm a roadie who's currently building my 1st mountain bike, a Kona Unit rigid ss, and am looking for opinions from you seasoned lot about tyres.

Weight is important to me, so is going tubeless, and all-round-a-bility.

What do you recommend and in what sizes?

Cheers!

running Beavers on mine as I use it in the mud/wet.

I'm tempted to try some Ardent 2.4" all round if we keep having nice weather.

See I'm looking for something I can use in all conditions, if such a tyre exists!?

Kenda Nevegals? I quite like mine, not too draggy in the dry and generously-knobbed enough to dig in to loose, sloppy stuff.

That said, the only other 29er tyre I've tried are Kenda small blocks 8s which are rubbish for anything other than dusty summer trails.

Bontrager 29.3's have transformed my rigid 29er. I'm running mine tubless and can get away with running them at around 17-18psi. High air volume, quite light, grippy and are good for most conditions with the exception of really bad mud in which they'll clog up.

Beavers's are a good option as an all rounder too but I've only used mine on the back.

I'd still say Ardent for all round except extreme mud.

But if you want mud then Beaver or Bonty Mud-X.

The folding Beavers are really light and work very well in wet or dry. Particularly like using my 29er to ride along streams with mine. Much better than 26" wheels for keeping the hubs and discs out of the water.

Bonty 29-4 on a nice wide rim, lots of volume so you can run it nice and soft. Use it all year round and just swap the rear tyre to suit conditions.

Ardent 2.4 up front (they are HUGE) or Bonty 29-4 (very grippy). Crossmark/Ikon or 29-2 out back. All have worked for me at some point.

3000 miles on tubeless Maxxis Ikons for me so far this year (rigid Singular Swift 29er)... Great in everything but claggy mud.

EXO version, tubeless. Great stuff.

I didn't really get on with Ardents or Small Block 8s. Ardents were a bit unpredictable for me; SB8s fragile.
