'Permissory'. What's wrong with the word 'Permissive', it's commonly used on Rights of Way.

Don't like. 👿

It's a military term, like "collateral damage" for "Oops, killed some poor person by mistake"

Probably best not to argue with a passing tank.

As if you need a sign to tell you to give way to tanks! 🙂

A person can be permissive, a thing cannot - thus is permissory?

Awaits knowledgable/pedants.

per·mis·sion? ?[per-mish-uhn]
noun
1.
authorization granted to do something; formal consent: to ask permission to leave the room.
2.
the act of permitting.
Origin:
1400–50; late Middle English < Latin permissi?n- (stem of permissi? ) a yielding, giving leave, equivalent to permiss ( us ) (past participle of permittere to permit) + -i?n- -ion

Related forms
per·mis·sioned, adjective
per·mis·so·ry ?[per-mis-uh-ree] Show IPA, adjective
non·per·mis·sion, noun
self-per·mis·sion, noun

-------------------------------------

So, it's a real word, adjective apparently.
Nowt wrong with it at all.

It's from yesterday and I'm never intolerant!

Other 'Permissory' signs did not feature tanks. According to OS map, they were Byways anyway so a little confused.

I really do not like this word. Is it an Americanism do you think?

Although you cant really have a permissive byway in the same way you can have a permissive bridleway or footpath, I think the MOD person who drafted the legal orders / event wherever that is, is particularly anal even for a RoW person!

The landowner can make restrictions on a permissive path which sometimes mightn't usually apply to normal highways, the use of the word permissory in preference to permissive is to do with when you are specifically prohibited from doing X, Y and Z, you are therefore legally (within reason) allowed to do A, B, C all the way to W.

In this case what makes it specifically permissory (e.g. when you can and can't use it) is you have to give way to tanks but otherwise knock yourself out. Which is why some of the signs have tanks on and some not, e.g. "stop if there is someone waving a red flag".

So yes, permissive would be fine for 99.99999% of people as 99.99999% of the time it means the same thing 🙂

So I have permissory access to the bits normally covered by Mrs crikeys underwear?

There are no tanks there, but equally, when access is denied, one would be foolish to attempt to gain access.

Indeed, you would have permissory access beyond your wifes undercrackers to do anything other than which she specified. You'd soon learn though the difference between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law with a swift kick to the nads 🙂

Waits for 'Tank vs cyclist (confrontation content)' thread.

The first rule of Plain Riding is, tanks have right of way.
The second rule of Plain Riding is, puddles can be deep. Very deep in fact, and you have no idea what's lurking in them!
The third rule of Plain Riding is, the Swan at Enford is a lovely place to drop off for a pint. Or five. Or more. In fact, falling asleep in a ditch somewhere around Fifield/Haxton is perfectly acceptable.

🙂
