which gps unit would folks recommend for mixed on and off-road use, for simple route navigation, and no training HRM / cadence stuff.

Basically just a map replacement that shows me where to go. Oh and easy to use. That's all.

Etrex if you prefer buttons. Dakota if you prefer touchscreen. Oregon if you prefer a larger display.

I have an Etrex 20 for exactly this purpose. It also takes AAA batteries, so you can take spares for a longer trip.

I just use my phone. There's some great ,mapping apps. Easy to plug an external battery in if required but it is rarely needed.
