Starting with the first Lockdown, working from home, carrying my daughter and cycling lots seemed to bring on some lower back ache. If fought it off all year with stretching, strengthening etc.

Road and MTB was giving back pain and a numb sore feeling on the outer quad and around lower back after 45mins cycling but now i think thats gone.

3-4 turbo sessions ago the inner quad on the same side felt quite a bit weaker that the other. In-fact both inner quads have started to ache early in a ride however the left seems to recover when warmed up and the right stays constantly weaker. This, coupled with the lower back ache is starting be be concerning.

I mentioned it to a consultant who has been looking after a neck disk bulge, he said that an MRI may show some degenerated discs and maybe some small bulges as most people have my age (38) but they wont necessarily be associated with the issue. In fact all it will do is cause worry and may hinder me further.

Has anyone experienced this and how has it worked out for you?

Sounds like a bulges disc pressing on a nerve. When I bulged a couple of discs in my lower back I had no power in my right calf for a while and a tingly right foot from time to time. It was fixed to a point with rest / anti inflammatories / pain killers - then physio and a cortisone injection into the area. Since then I’ve tried to keep up with some physio prescribed exercises to keep my core engaged and in a more supportive position.

I now always have to stretch off before any kind of exercise otherwise my lower back can tighten up and get painful. Just a situation I have to be aware of and manage but doesn’t stop me doing any exercise I want to do generally.

Not good for me, get it sorted before it goes too far!

Had back trouble on and off since a very young man, 57 now. Around eight years ago I had a slip at work which set it off again, very severe sciatica etc carried on working through it for a week or so until my left knee just gave way and couldn't support any weight any more. MRI showed two lowest discs bulging and pressing on nerves. So, for a long time after that I was limping around keeping my left leg straight as I didn't have any strength there to support bending the knee. During that time the muscles of my left thigh virtually disapeared especially on the outside. Eventually I was able to start walking something like normally again as the muscles on the front inner thigh above the knee started to be able to support some weight. Had lots of investigations after that which revealed nerve damage and was told I would probably never get the use of the outer muscles back. Spent a long time since then trying to rebuild muscle and about two years ago I found I had enough strength to start riding again. It's been along road and the group of muscles on the outside of my thigh are still very week and small but I seem to be able to compensate with the others. I can now walk normally and am getting stronger on the bike all the time but when out of the saddle getting over the top of the pedal stroke can still be a bit jerky with my left leg.
