The OH's birthday is approaching and I'm thinking about buying him some riding trousers for over the winter as he's mentioned a few times about getting some. Don't necessarily need to be waterproof as I'm fairly sure he'll be more of a fair weather rider seeing as he complains already about wet roots and mud! Just want something to keep the worst of the mud and spray off the bottoms of legs really. Have seen the loose rider pants which dont seem ridiculously overpriced as well as the nukeproof blackline pants. Any other recommendations? I'm very aware that the fit of them varies massively so may have to try a few different pairs out.

I have a pair of these which work well
I've been firmly shorts only for my whole riding life but last year I got some Fox Indicator trousers and they're my favourite bit of kit. Light and stretchy, snug not flappy, not waterproof but very fast drying.
In fact I really want more but I can't see them online. If anyone knows if they've changed the name or replaced them with something similar that would be good.
I like the Fox Defends that Tracy links to. I also have some Fox Flexairs that are lighter, cheaper and work well but the fit is funny so I always feel a bit Lord Flasheart from Blackadder goes fourth when I wear them. Neither are warm, in fact the ventilation can give you a rather cool breeze in the winter but trousers are brilliant for being easy to take off leaving clean legs underneath.
Im pretty sure in some recent thread on here there was some love for Decathlon mountaineering trousers...but im not sure which ones. Your Google-Fu may be stronger than mine....
^good call if you want to keep the price down. I have a couple of pairs of stretchy trecking trousers from Decathlon that are great for the price, MH500 or something like that.

Keela Roadrunners.
The Decathlon ones were the NH500 Slim, £20 or so, I'm on my second pair
Normally massive decathlon fan but I find their trousers a really odd fit. Much to tight round thighs. Shame cos they seem good otherwise.
Nukeproof Blacklines are really good, wore mine most of last winter and apart from some fading on the arse, look like the day I got them.
I'm after another pair, something different so watching with interest. A point on the Flexairs, if he's lanky like me, I thought they were really sorry in the leg.

I thought the Indicator became the flexair pant?
