Hi all,

Not quite sure what I am looking for, but here goes.

Throughout the year, if its not too wet, I tend to just wear one or two baselayer/jerseys. I'd like to get another layer for colder days, and maybe if its a bit wet/muddy out (but not chucking it down).

For reference, I have a Montane Dyno softshell, and I'm looking for something quite a bit thinner/more breathable.

- Probably more of a windbreaker than anything.
- Not too warm (I run pretty hot), very breathable
- Material that is water/mud resistant to some degree (not for example, just a merino base layer) - but keeps moisture off a bit better than a regular baselayer
- Relaxed fit, probably with a hood

I have been looking at the Patagonia Dirt Roamer jacket (hence the other thread), and may still go for it, just not sure if its a bit overkill, and a bit too much jacket, for what I actually need. Wonder if there are any thinner single layer hooded tops that might work better?

Thanks,
Duane.

Endura MT500 Thermo jersey? Has had various names over the years "jersey jacket", the latest one has a hood.

my current goto cooler day top is merino/polyester jumper I picked up in a charity shop, I think it was originally designed for walkers but it just so nice to wear over a base layer good down to around 5 degrees.

Have a look at the

Rab Borealis

Or

Mountain Equipment Echo jackets.

I have both and they both provide what you are looking for.

I use a Haglofs windshirt. It has a thin layer of insulation on the front of the torso so you get extra insulation from the front but the arms and back are lightweight. Think of it as the next stage up from a gilet. It is aimed at runners so not long in the back. Showerproof but in heavier rain you'd need something over it.

Thanks for the replies all.

Does anyone know how the ME Echo compares to the Rab Borealis, and how they both compare to the Montane Dyno?

Nobeer - do you have that top? Would it fit over baselayers/jerseys that aren't a slim fit? ie a typical MTB jersey?

Thanks
Duane

bikesandboots, I really like the look of that endura jacket/jersey, but I'm wary of the "thermo" in the name - suggests it will be pretty warm (and I couldn't find any reviews to confirm or deny that)?

I have a ME Echo jacket and used it for commuting and hill walking. Very windproof, beathes well and tough material.

Take a look at the Alpkit Morphosis. I have the smock version and use it a lot for hill walking - see no reason it couldn't be used on the bike. Has a good cut - not too trim, not too baggy. They also do a full zip hooded version. Free returns with Alpkit as well.

If you're feeling flush, Arc'teryx Proton FL Hoody. Got one cheap at SportPursuit last year and is excellent.

I have had the Montane Dyno it's a thicker material and warmer than both the Borealis and the Echo.

The Borealis is slightly thinner / more delicate than the Echo but not a lot in it.

Both very good pack small cut the wind will fend off light rain dry quick.

As far as I can tell from photos and descriptions of material/features, all these are evolutions of the same product:
1. previous versions, presumably
2. MT500 FULL ZIP L/S JERSEY II BLACK
3. MT500 THERMO L/S JERSEY BLACK
4. MT500 Thermo II Long Sleeve Jersey - now has a hood

I have #2, currently using it over a tech t-shirt for forest rides in northern England. All the warmth and wind protection I need when riding (I also run hot), but I do chill after a few minutes stopped. Haven't been out in the rain with it, but mud and splashes do make it damp although I never felt it through on my back. Returning to the car I swap it off along with my trousers and drive home. It's not a relaxed fit, could get 1-2 t-shirts/jerseys underneath but not a fleece or elbow pads, it's a mid layer. The main zip on my version is a bit small, feels like a pocket-grade rather than main closure zip.

I have one of these, it's basically a very thin softshell which I wear over a jersey or baselayer.

Not very warm, not very water resistant, but dries very quick - and I've been wearing it loads recently as it just works well in cool weather when it's been raining and the trails are splashy.

Great front pockets as well.

Paid a fair bit less for mine, but I reckon it's probably worth the £40 there.
