What riding pants out there are a good fit for those not shaped like a pencil, please?

I'm hardly Quadrophenia over here but Dakine, Fox Defend and Ranger pants are all a *bit* too tight here. Are the Patagonia, Rapha and 50to01 pants a looser fit and have more room to actually move and breath in...

Cheers

have you reached the maximum size available in the Fox, Dakine stuff?

TLDs. they're generous in both waist and leg width.

I'm a standard waist size, tried XL and more with Dakine and Fox but I can barely do the waist up close to tight...

Rapha medium are spot on medium, with no excess bagginess. No experience with other sizes.

I’m a standard waist size

You're going to have to be more specific than that. Standard for who?

Fox Flexair are spray on, so add those to your list to avoid.

Having said that, i quite like the pair i recently picked up... feel like a world cup racer in a skin suit 😛

My Madison Zenith riding trews seem more generous than some other brands, but I haven't tried that many TBF.

Discounted here: https://www.cyclestore.co.uk/madison_zenith_4season_dwr_waterproof_trail_trousers-ID_83255?opt=173357&gclid=CjwKCAiA2fmdBhBpEiwA4CcHzZivPSmEhhLwEG8jKLdzBYeLQK9SM2muswfSRKLmho_nhZdw6FA96xoCkOEQAvD_BwE

Says waterproof but it's just bum/thigh panels on mine, softshell legs.

The great thing about the fox pants is the ratchet fits, so you can easily go up a size. I have "solid" thighs and a 36" waist. So I have a sleek set in L and a baggy set in XL.

First off thanks for calling them pants. I’m all for upsetting the old people around here by not calling them trousers 😂😂

I have a 50to01 pair that are slim ish, comparatively I would say my Patagonia dirt roamer waterproof things are roomier overall. Although the ankle opening isn’t, which I don’t feel is a problem. The Troy lee stuff I’ve had in the past has also been bigger for a given size than say the fox/royal pants I’ve had

Rapha small is spot on for my 30" waist/32" leg.

Madison 3 season ones I had to send back as they didn't remotely fit - can't remember exactly how, right now. (Annoying as the waterproof shorts I have are spot on)

Mate has the Fox ones and they are teenager tight. The TLD ones i have seem like a good balance, fitted but not too much.

Ha, yeah! I got some flex air pants from Santa in 34", but **** me they are tight, great if you wanna bring back hair metal but no thanks.

33w & 30L, not much fits, nevermind getting them past the baby cows.

I find Fox trousers a really odd fit, I tried some last year and they weren't even long enough to get to my (quite long) socks. I am also not sure I'd have got knee pads under them either even though the waist was a good fit.

Troy Lee or Endura for me, even the £40 decathlon ones were good for a season.

Not just me then? Echo the comments about Rapha, I'm 75kg, 32-34 waist and 178cm and their medium is bang on, alos Decathalon Large and Sweet Protection Hunter in med fit me well.

Pants for the win. My wife is Canadian, I've been shopping in my pants, getting grass-stains on my pants, carrying all my change in my pants pockets for years now

Lol at this thread. I’ve just about got used to the idea that the special trousers I bought to my ride my push bike round the woods in are to be called pants.
Teenager tight is a new one on me but I like it.
I’ve ordered some dhb or possibly fohn ones off CRC that have been delivered today so I shall try them tonight.
I do think long trousers for riding off road is a good idea most of the time. First dabbled with some decathlon walking trousers a few years back that were good from a fit and stretch perspective but the material below the knee got saturated and heavy in wet weather so then got the cheap decathlon mtb trews which are made of better material but I think I got a size too big so although I can cinch the waist in they are a bit baggy around the groin area. Will see if the new ones are a better fit. I’m at the 36-37” waist end of things so sometimes L sometimes XL

I now know not to even bother ordering fox pants…

i tried on a lot of enduro trousers recently. chromag ones have good thigh and arse room while not being too big on the waste (edit: and groin) with space for medium-chunky knee pad. heavy material, so definitely more winter wear.

or as a resident wag, or curmudgeon, recently pointed out ron hill bikesters!

Sport Pursuit has the Rapha trail ones at half price. The 'purple' colour is actually more of a burgundy and quite nice:

No idea if they'll fit you, but really nicely cut and good fabric, features etc.

As a large thighed type I have a great solution in a pair of relatively inexpensive walking trousers that I took in at the calf. Pretty easy as sewing jobs go but still needs a bit of know-how.

I think these will be the last pair I buy to be honest.
I know the fabric I like/want, just the fit i'm struggling with unless i become Olivia Newton John overnight. Sort the fit, i'll then make me own.

At least it's not just me then.

P.s trousers = work
Pants = fun

Best I've had by far are the old style Specialized Demo Pro pants and still going strong. Can still be found discounted on a few sites. I have a pair of the new ones but they are a bit tighter than the older ones.

Your picture above is of underpants. You know, the item to you wear under  your pants 😉

Of course, folk should just use the word breeks. That would resolve the issue.

Bought my boy some Troy Lees for xmas, they were pretty true to size in a large, not noticebly huge.
I've got Pearl Izumi from a Freewheel sale that was PSA'ed on here and they are nice n roomy.
These -

Ones to definitely not go for are Leatt - they is teensy pants

@desperatebicycle

Ha, yeah, the Leatt stuff has been designed by ants, think I spent a year going back and forth with CRC until finally giving up wondering if they'll do something which fits.

I have 2 pairs a Troosers for biking
One pair are fox rangers which get well,Pads go on under earth fine
Second pairs are Endura Humvee which are same waist size as my shorts but the thighs are proper tight when sat on bike to pedal and I’m not the biggest of thigh guy
Fox defo more comfy and baggier

Can second Pearl Izumi being worth a look: I've got some (Launch Trail), and they're baggier than I'd ideally like - which might be what you're looking for. I got them for £45 on SportPursuit, though it looks like they're now £60. I prefer the fit of my Nukeproof Blackline, though the PI fabric is better.
