I'm spending a few days with my folks around Stonehouse, Gloucestershire (near Stroud) - anyone know what the riding's like around there? I probably won't be able to get away for much more than a couple of hours at a time (kids...) so it needs to be rideable from the door really. I can take either a CX or mtb so happy to ride whatever's best suited

From Stonehouse you can ride up to Haresfield beacon (Standish woods) - there are a few trails there. You will appear at the "quarry" if you are coming from Stonehouse and there is some obvious stuff there. From Haresfield, it is a short hop to Cranham/ Painswick. (head towards ca park and then past the new house build. Turn into the woods on the left before the main road and do that trail - its great)

Just be aware, if you're planning on riding in Cranham woods then there is a finite list of the tracks that you're supposed to ride on. It's been a v.sticky issue over the past year. Do a search on here for Cranham Woods.

Thanks.

Cranham Woods looks like it's too far away so no issue there 😉

Follow Stanley Wood out to Uley and have a nose around there. Probably claggy though.

Probably claggy though.

Agree. You're in the middle of the stickiest bog in every direction.
Shame really as there are some really nice xc routes in the area, but not with the current wetness.

i would almost say don't bother bringing the bike, the trails are a mess with all the wet weather.

I'd consider using your Cx on the road. Lovely, mostly open and relatively flat riding round there. (compared with South Wales anyhow)

Theres stacks of stuff round the valleys and woods of Stroud but your best option for a few hours is definitely Standish/randwick Woods. Best way from Stonehouse is head towards Gloucester on B4008, turn right up Horsemarling Lane.

Up there are some trails including a national trust marked single track route, some unofficial single track, a few not-particlarly-steep but great fun downhills, and some shorter jump / drop runs dotted around near the various quarries.

Take your mtb and explore. Obviously best is to get shown around but you should be able to find most of the stuff fairly easily

And thanks from me too. I'll probably take my CX bike and just explore.
