Hello all. Having started a job in Royton (Oldham) a few weeks ago, and being on best behavior so as to mislead people into thinking I'm employable I now need to revert to type.

This will involve nipping out and using my lunch hour to get mucky on't bike, coming back for the afternoon grinning like a maniac and covered head to toe in crap.

I've ridden in today and intend to go exploring. The view from my office window is incredible. There has to be a whole multitude of stuff out there. Does anyone know the area? Know any quick hour-long blasts? I'm heading up Tandle Hill today as a starting point

Or longer stuff for after work with the lights? (I'll probably head up Hollingworth way for that)

Any advice/pointers/local knowledge welcome y'all

Thanks!

There's trails up to the mast thing off Buckstones Road (used as Eddies Revenge fell race) heading over to Crompton Moor - probably okay for a lunchtime blast.

You're welcome - gotta be better on a bike than as a fell race... 😉

there's a green MTB trail and a pump track up on Crompton Moor, as built by Try-cycles and the northwestriders group. Speak to mark @ try-cycles and tell him you know me, he showed me some reaslly niec stuff up that way

Lots of stuff. Not sure about an hour blast though as the only thing riding from Royton would be Tandle Hills, which can be lots of fun. Used to ride here when I were a lad & there's some good 'off piste' fun to be had between the trees, although I imagine at this time of the year the leaf litter will be a bit of a mess.

Buckstones/Crompton Moor, up to the mast & back down through the old mini DH trails in the forest is fun. Not a bad network of bridleways & paths on that hill alone actually - you could kill a lunchtime there but would have to drive up.

Post-work you could head from the top of Crompton Moor to Piethorn/Ogden Reservoirs in Newhey. Again a decent sized network of paths which would keep you busy exploring for a few hours. There's another mast at the top on the A672/Ripponden Road HERE near the Saddleworth junction on the M62. From here there are good trails out over to White Hill, but the best way is up to Blackstone Edge. Saying that, Blackstone Edge is better if you start at Hollingworth Lake and dropping down to the mast above Newhey.

You could also easily look at routes from Hollingworth Lake or Watergrove Reservoir (other side of Littleborough) that will take you out towards Studley Pike/Todmordon.

Plenty to keep you happy!!

Well... that was fun. I headed the other way today. Rode up to the top of Tandle Hill. The view was fantastic today. Clear blue skies and sunshine 🙂 had a great little 'off-piste' trip down again. Bit hairy with the 'whats underneath all those leaves question. Sunk half way up the front wheel at one point.

Great fun that. And back in just under an hour. I expect there's lots more to be found up there

I'm going to head the other way up to the mast tomorrow. Looks like a happy lunchtime hunting ground round here though. WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO

Thanks for that chaps. peachos - I regularly ride those routes from Hollingworth/over Blackstone. There's some belting stuff over there. I can see that being a regular stop off point on the way home. Rude not too really if i'm working so close 🙂
