i've got some time booked off before christmas and looking at getting get some cheap flights to alicante for 4 days riding. I have the 'The Trailrider Guide - Spain' guidebook which suggests the Sierra Espuna as a good spot for some riding near there, with a campsite at El Berro which looks good for a base.

has anyone got experience of this area and riding there in particular?

i was planning on leaving my bike bag at the alicante train or bus station (get bus with the bike bag from the airport to alicante centre then build the bike there) then train to alhama de murcia via murcia then ride up to El Berro from there (14km). will just take my usual bikepacking gear for camping so luggage carrying not an issue, small tent, down bag, mat, lightweight cooking stuff, basic tools, bike & after bike clothing plus a jacket

main queries are:

- is the riding there worth a trip for 3/4 days?
- anyone know if left luggage at either train or bus station for bike bags?
- bearing in mind will have to ride to el berro from alhama de murcia it it more xc hardtail or trail-bike riding? ie: is it worth taking my nukeproof mega tr or will my 29er hardtail do?
- weather wise will all the trails be ridable? i note the guide book suggests december isn't ideal time to go and there could be snow at high ground but the trails only seem to go to 900m or so. i've been riding around malaga & el chorro around january before would it be similar
- anything else in the vicinity worth looking at?

cheers

There is some good stuff north as well around Benidorm, the town is surrounded by amazing mountains and there are quite a few MTB clubs and guides around there.

I've had a couple of riding holidays based out of El Berro. The riding is great - defo worth a visit. Your Mega wouldn't be out of place there if you find the right trails - it's rocky, and some of the best trails are quite brutal. 29er should be ok too, but perhaps less fun, especially if it's not set up for angry stuff. I love the scenery and terrain out there - it's a bit like the SW USA - dry canyons, sharp rock, remote gullies, lots of rocks etc. Proper puncture territory. You will need to pedal plenty though, and route finding could be interesting. The campsite is very friendly and the village is great - small, old, largely unspoilt (or was when I was last there a few years back). There are a couple of bars and I think one of the owners might be a cyclist, and maybe the campsite owner too. Ask around for advice on routes etc. Not sure what the weather will be this time of year. Have a great trip.

had a great time in and around el berro - met a chap called pitu who runs this website below he's a qualified mtb guide and knows all the trails like the back of his hand. can tailor routes for all abilities not just 'enduro'
