Erm, as title says. I am heading to Japan, probably around May/June (after a trip through Oz and NZ) and am looking to find some places to ride. Speacifically Trail/FreeRide/AM/Marketingbuzzword for larking about inc a bit of DH.

Any one been, any one want to go and is ahead of me in terms of research, any one know of any reasonable looking guides?

All help appreciated.

Cheers

Yes, yes, no

When I was over, there didn't seem to be much for visitors.

If you had your own stuff then there is bits but we found it really difficult

I know a guy who lives over there. Check out Rhythm Cycles in Niseko (nisekocycles.com). They do rentals and the area is meant to have sweet trails including proper DH track etc.

From what I can tell there are a lot of ski resorts in the winter, but very few turn into bike resorts for the summer season, but there are trails there if you know where to look.

I've been to Japan a couple of times, but never managed to ride much more than a shopper.

I asked a similar question a while back before my trip, but unfortunately I didn't manage to find anywhere to ride properly. See here:

Ganbatte kudasai... And if you find anything out post back here, I'd still love to do some riding in Japan...

I took my mtb out to Japan a year ago whilst there on business.

I believe there are some official mtb trails around but I never used them, what I did end up doing was riding on some of the hiking paths in the local area (in Kanagawa).

Unlike the UK where we would have received a whole torrent of abuse, the locals just thought we were nutters. LOL

The fact they were hiking paths was an issue as we hurtled over one crest to find a huge set of steps that just couldn't be ridden, so you need to watch out.
People are more relaxed out here and can share the use of tracks/trails

There are loads of good maps around that show approx times to climb the tracks in mins (the shorter the track, the longer the time = the steeper it is).

I climbed to the top of Mount Oyama in July this year to find a bloke with a MTB at the top, no idea how he got it there or was planning to get it back down!

I have just spent 2 weeks in Japan but not with the bike....

I travelled through a fair bit of the country and was amazed how mountainous the landscape is.

I couldn't help thinking that it could be a MTB paradise!

Amazing country,people,culture and food.

Enjoy it!

Ok, Rhythm Cycles, or an exploring adventure. It's not a cheap place to be spending days searching for trails and routes. So ,PocketShepard, I'll look into the Niseko area a bit and report back with findings...

Thanks all.
