What with the current financial situation I'm wondering whether Greece could be a good place for a cheep bit of winter sun. has anyone ridden out there and recommend places to go and maybe even suggest guides etc.

Cheers

Doesn't it hammer down in Greece in winter?

Might be a bit much of a generalisation...

We went to Nidri with neilson years ago, but we knew the guide so f did what we wanted for the week. Without that, the riding was probably just OK, but we had a hoot that week.

I wouldn't describe Greece as a winter sun destination myself, having been there a few times in winter. Crete probably stays warmer for a bit longer.
Mountain biking would probably be good but less sure about cycling on the roads in Greece.

Also, having just returned from there, Greece isn't the bargain people might think it is, at least in the main tourist areas. That may all change if/when a decision is made on their debts...

If we all chip in a couple of quid each, we could probably buy it, and turn it into a massive time-share trail centre utopia

I'm in Vounaki right now with Neilson and the mountain biking is ok. There are plenty of of hills but I've not seen much singletrack yet, it's all Greek roads which means rocky double track. The Saturday black ride is the one to do, 28 miles, 5200ft of climbing and tops out at 3200ft. The bikes are good but at bit XC for the rocky hills. Fine going up but hard work on the arms down.

2 different locations:

Both with in 30mins of Thessaloniki Greece's 2nd biggest city. Fights £100ish return.

Both trail heads: http://bit.ly/1CAEPLe

Plus urban DH race??

Surely there's a risk that if things get much worse, they will resort to eating foreign tourists in order to avoid starving....
